Her Politics

Posted by on Thu, Aug 27, 2009 at 10:02 AM

From my sister:

"Distressed..exactly how many people have never worked in the UK and receive benefits!!? What has the world come to. I blame the liberals!"
After all these years, it finally dawns on me that my very own sister, who is trained as a lawyer and lives in London, is really conservative. I realize only now that we do not share the same political views. I realize she has never taken my Marxism seriously. Her heart is hard on the right. My sister is almost a stranger to me.

She's a lawyer and her writing skills are that poor?

Charles, I hate to break it to you, but anybody with a sense of history or humanity dosn't take marxism seriously.

And you're sharing this on the SLOG?

Jokes aside, Charles, you should not put any member of your family in the piranha tank of the blogosphere.

Especially if she's a lawyer. Too late. You're probably already screwed.

Charles,
I understand. My sister is liberal (which I found out relatively recently) and I'm conservative. She and I are great friends too. It can happen.

Those damn liberals! I want to see people dying in the streets, godamnit! Us pro-lifers need to stick together and shut the hospitals to anyone without cash.

I guess when they handed out brains in your family, your sister got them all. Too bad, Charles.

Which one is she in that picture you posted?

What are we supposed to get from reading a snippet like this?

Finish writing your blog entry before posting it.

Except for a short period during my freshmnan year of college, I've never taken anyone's Marxism seriously.

It sums up the main point of the teabaggers pretty succinctly: "I'm worried that somebody might get medical care who I don't think deserves it."

How do you think she feels, Charles? Oh that's right, it's all about you.

I know someone who never worked in the UK but received benefits. She was an American tourist and had a medical problem while traveling in the UK. The NHS took care of it. I don't know if Charles' Marxism deserves to be taken seriously, but socialism sure does seem civilized.

@3, If you are referring to the atrocities perpetrated by the soviets, you are not accurately framing a discussion of Marxism. The russians put entirely too much faith in a half-baked political system based on a philosophy that is critical by its nature, not prescriptive. In concordance with their excess of faith in the dialectic, they failed to understand the power of post-industrial/monopolistic capitalism. If the Soviets had been true Marxists, they would have seen the futility of their project in the face of the efficient marketplace.

Sounds like my gay Republican brother. The funny thing is that, when he does the political spectrum tests, he ends up as more liberal than the Democratic party.

I can relate, Charles. I got a rude shock like that from my bro-in-law the other day. And regularly from my sister. It's oddly a bit of a shock each time because you expect them to be like you. Unfortunate indeed.

Can there be a mid-way point between over-obsessing over the dogma of a long-dead theorist, and the self-centered yearning for an "earlier time" that is right-wing values. No offense, but it seems like neither of you is really thinking.

I feel the same way. Once a few years ago, my brother stated that he thinks Fox News was the best/gets it right. I don't remember his words, but the knowledge that my highly intelligent brother somehow buys this crap was shocking.

Somebody should remind sister woman that if it weren't for the Liberals she wouldn't be practicing law in England - she'd probably be somebody's maid.

Tizzle,

I've observed my Birth-Father descend into the world of FOX News since the turn of the century. All my efforts to present cable news (especially FOX) as the last place to go for any reality based information have been fruitless. He'd rather spend his time watching O'Reilly than speaking to me. My Father has become a hater.

I'm the lone blue shirt in a sea of red at family reunions (my side), it makes for interesting dinner discussions. I'm sure they all privately wonder where they went wrong.

Good show, all.
Like an AA meeting or something, where everybody confesses that they, too, have a conservative in their family.

But consider, for a moment, how YOU would feel if that conservative family member featured YOU in a blog, somberly shaking their head and confessing bewilderment in your beliefs.

Imagine those comments, where like-minded conservatives express anger and share their stories of how ashamed they are of their own liberal relatives.

So everybody here is real goddamn proud of their own personal politics. Fine. Hooray. Good on you.

But Charles... you should be ashamed of the cheap and shallow shot you took at your own sister.

And for what? Politics? Philosophy?
That's just fucking sad, man.
Prideful, spiteful, and childish.

Sir Vic 27
@14 Thanks for pointing out that Marxism is a political paradigm, to be used for analysis, as opposed to a full-fledged system of government. Too many people conflate Marxism with Stalinism, etc. Marxism is handy for studying large social groups that aren't necessarily defined by a leader's personality and charisma. It starts to become less useful when one realizes that actual history is made by real people and not just theoretical categories of people.

For those castigating Charles for dissing his sister: it's wise to stay out of the family quarrels of others.
