A couple better-than-they-ought-to-be movies are out on DVD today. I really enjoyed Adventureland. Like, to a surprising degree:
Even Ryan Reynolds, as a sexy handyman who just can't seem to grow up and stop scoring with barely-post-high-school girls, shows a depth that usually escapes him. But the best of the bunch is Kristen Stewart who—I can't believe I'm about to write this—between her work here and in Twilight, is actually shaping up to be one of the best Hollywood actresses of her generation. As Em, Stewart is impressive: She's not just your typical adoring date-movie lead, and neither is she the dramatic lost girl who airily floats along to a tragic end. She's a popular girl who makes mistakes and has the strength and smarts to understand she can do better.
I also liked Fighting more than I thought I would:
Every so often, there's a movie like Fighting: a gritty, urban multicultural potboiler that's WAY BETTER than it has any right to be. Films like the original The Fast and the Furious or Dark Blue are B movies, to be sure, but they crackle with so much earnest talent that they practically feel like something new.
Lindy West was exasperated by the Clive Owen/Julia Roberts corporate espionage movie Duplicity:
This is obviously some Feminism 101 shit, but how come a lady-spy always has to be boning everyone to get her job done? These days? Still? I know man-spies engage in strategic bonery from time to time, when they feel like it, when the "mark" is a magnificent babe in a bear-fur bikini, but they also sometimes don't.
She liked Sunshine Cleaning a little bit more:
Sunshine Cleaning—not to be confused with Little Miss Sunshine, which was also a bittersweet/wacky family comedy involving an impish child and Alan Arkin—is a testament to the miracle of casting.
Other releases today include the release of Whit Stillman's 1998 film The Last Days of Disco; the, um, classic film Billy Jack; the catchily named Playmate-starring Bare-Naked Survivor Again; Full Grown Men, a straight-to-video comedy starring Judah Friedlander, Deborah Harry, Alan Cumming, and Amy Sedaris as "a clown bartender." You can also rent the astoundingly titled The Gospel Comedy All-Stars 2: These Ain't Your Momma's Church Jokes.
TV selections include the Batman-for-kids cartoon The Brave and the Bold: Season 1; House, M.D.: Season 5; Lie to Me: Season 1; and something called NCIS: Season 6.
