So You Want to See Wicked for $25

Posted by on Tue, Aug 25, 2009 at 12:30 PM

September is your lucky month:

A day-of-performance lottery for a limited number of orchestra seats will be held daily for WICKED, which will be performing from September 2 through October 4 at The Paramount Theatre.

Each day, 2½ hours prior to show time people who present themselves at The Paramount Theatre box office will have their names placed in a lottery drum and then thirty minutes later, names will be drawn for a limited number of orchestra seats at $25 each, cash only. This lottery is available only in-person at the box office, with a limit of two tickets per person.

You have either a slump in ticket sales or the big-hearted folks at Broadway Across America to thank.

And the trailer:

The lottery tickets were started on Broadway by the production of RENT which starred Idina Menzel who also orignated the role of Elpheba in Wicked. Basically the majority of performers in RENT never saw a Broadway show as they never could afford one. At least that is what I have read in the book of RENT.

"Wicked" the musical is an abomination of "Wicked" the novel.

Oh come on, the musical is so much better than the book! At least when it's performed by Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel. (This trailer, however, has reset my expectations for this performance downward... by a lot.)

You could say the same thing about every Musical that has ever come from a book. Art is a form that can take on other mediums and the author of the book Wicked is very happy with the musical. They are two different animals - That is the point.

So if I understand it correctly, there's a 30-minute window to enter the lottery?

"Each day, 2½ hours prior to show time people who present themselves at The Paramount Theatre box office will have their names placed in a lottery drum and then thirty minutes later, names will be drawn..."

I'm not saying "Wicked" the musical doesn't work as a musical. I'm merely saying that, as an adaptation, it is an abomination of the novel.

1)The novel is ok but never lives up to its potential because Maguire isn't that great of a writer.

2)The musical is 2 and 1/2 hours of fabulous production design and horrid, shrieking songs.
And, I love musicals...I hate THIS musical.

I have seen the San Francisco production 4 going on 5 times and love it even more each time - but that is what is great - we all have opinons. Of course I have seen over 40 Broadway shows in New York - What do I know....same as every one else.

They have a Lottery here in NYC for every performance even though every show is Sold Out. They also did it for every performance in LA (for a year and a half.) Best way to see the show. People sitting right behind you have paid over $150 a seat.

The novel was very creative, but the ending sucked talking donkey's balls.

Wicked has always had the lottery. This is true of the Broadway company and the touring company. I had best seat of my life for 25 dollars.
