Clash of Civilizations

Posted by on Mon, Aug 24, 2009 at 1:34 PM

This isn't going to help France's strained race relations:

For centuries it has been a haven of cultural refinement, a stunningly beautiful mansion in which Chopin composed, George Sand wrote and Voltaire lived with his mistress.

But according to a group of furious Parisian luminaries, the Hôtel Lambert is facing "imminent disaster" from the modernising zeal of its new owner, a member of the Qatari royal family.

What else would expect of someone from Qatar?

They don't even use an "U" after the "Q" in their name...

Paris is a little unusual in that Parisians actually were the first inhabitants, the aborigines, whose first camp was on that island where this house is. It's kind of sacred land to almost everyone who thinks he's a Parisian.

And yeah, the house already has the three elevators and twelve bathrooms the Rothschilds managed to get permitted. But still, just because it passes into the hands of an absolute monarch, all of a sudden he can't build an underground car park for the fleet of Porsches he got when he bought that giant stake in that company last month?

I think this is appealing to racists, sure, but to the extent it also shows off the deep anti-monarchy that remains a bedrock part of the republic over there, I kinda like it.
