Reading Today

Two events today. Both are funnybook related.

The Phinney Neighborhood Association hosts the Henry Chamberlain Comics Workshop. Chamberlain says "[the workshop] will be a chance to explore all you need to know about how to create a comic." I had never heard of Chamberlain before, but there is information about him and one of his books here. You can maybe look at this and decide if you want to learn about comics with him.

The Big Funnybook Action for the day, though, is in Georgetown, at the Fantagraphics Bookstore. Eroyn Franklin will be attending a release party and signing for her new book Another Glorious Day at the Nothing Factory. It's a really gorgeous book, laid out with text pages facing full pages of black-and-white woodcuts. Some of the text, about the dissolution of the narrator's marriage and previous failed relationships, gets a little melodramatic, but the book is so gorgeous and hypnotic—like a children's book for adults working on their second divorce—it makes up for the forays into treacle. This is clearly the reading of the day.

The full readings calendar, including the next week or so, is here. And if you're planning on staying in and you're looking for personalized book recommendations, feel free to tell me the books you like and ask me what to read next over at Questionland.
