McGinn Regains the Lead

Posted by on Fri, Aug 21, 2009 at 4:26 PM

King County Elections has released the next batch of results. At this point, it's sort of moot: Nickels has conceded, and we know which top two candidates will move onto the general election. But McGinn has leapfrogged over Mallahan in the most recent returns:

Seattle Mayor

Mike McGinn: 36909 — 27.60%
Joe Mallahan: 36129 — 27.01%
Greg Nickels: 33996 — 25.42%
James Donaldson: 10906 8.15%
Jan Drago: 9671 — 7.23%
Elizabeth Campbell: 3297 — 2.47%
Kwame Wyking Garrett: 1357 — 1.01%
Norman Zadok Sigler: 1165 — 0.87%

Whereas McGinn was 540 behind votes yesterday, he's now 780 votes ahead. Also, it looks like Nickels was right when, in his concession announcement, he said, “I’m a pretty good vote counter.“ Indeed, he's further behind today than ever.

Meanwhile, Susan Hutchison's lead is shrinking in later returns. She now has less that one-third of the votes, with Dow Constantine advancing.

King County Executive

Susan Hutchison: 106418 — 33.27%
Dow Constantine: 85449 — 26.72%
Fred Jarrett: 39050 — 12.21%
Larry Phillips: 38686 — 12.10%
Ross Hunter: 34991 — 10.94%
Alan Lobdell: 7727 — 2.42%
Goodspaceguy: 3643 — 1.14%
Stan Lippmann: 3460 — 1.08%

Assuming a vast majority of voters who supported Jarrett, Phillips, and Hunter—the second, third, and fourth place Democrats in the executive race—coalesce around Constantine, Republican Hutchison will be creamed in the general election.

More results are here.

Dorsol's picking up votes - he'll probably end up in 2nd at this rate.

Lol, that would be VERY fun.

Man, I was wrong, huh?

You can't make any real guesses on the general election here, unlike Hutchinson v. Constantine; it's far from obvious who will get the 45% of the votes up for grabs. We has us a horse race.

I didn't think that McGinn had a chance. Guess his campaign showed me and the rest of the doubters.

And I'm betting he does quite well in the general too...Maybe not well enough, but Mallahan's got a real task cut out for him: why vote for someone who has hardly ever voted himself and who has basically zero civic involvement.

@3 - Yeah, I notice Dorsol's count, too - from under 12% to over 14%. I would have liked seeing him on the city council. It needs fresh air in the worst way.

Constantine could take 65% of Jarrett, Phillips and Hunter voters, and still lose in November.

And that's also assuming nobody votes in the General election except Primary voters.

I'm for McGinn, but I have to ask: Doesn't "leapfrogged" imply "overtaken by a large margin" ? 6/10th of a percent ain't that terrifically large a 'jump'. Jus' sayin.

Meanwhile, the R-71 signatures data is headed in the wrong direction... The duplicate signature rate slowed today, and the new data today a substantially lower error rate than the prior two days...

At current rates, the measure will be clear by about 500 signatures. Ugh.

My name is Wyking Garrett and I am running for Mayor of Seattle to join you in creating a city that exceeds its potential and values all of its citizens. I am committed to working with you to bring the new energy and real change needed to bridge the best of Seattle’s heritage with the opportunities of the future. Together we can make Seattle shine as a beacon of true diversity, opportunity, and equity.

Seattle must judge its success based on the health of our families and communities, youth and schools, economy and small businesses. May it be unexpected snow or irruption of youth violence, Greg Nickels has too often given citizens the cold shoulder while favoring developers and big money. Enough is enough!ˇNo más!

@12

The children's game of Leapfrog is played by having one participant stand behind the other, then hop over the other so that the one participant is now standing in front of the other. I don't think any kind of distance or margin is implied.

For those of you totally bored out of your mind by the election, check out this burning doll house.

It's enough to make me want to be a pyro.

The cat that appears now and then and is totally oblivious to the fire is pretty funny too.

#24 - olease hold your breath for the last count.

Missing by 7 points is a rout.

This was a can of shit from day one - and for some reason - the new pseudo enviros did not want to admit that Conlin and company did a poor job, after all he likes goats as pets.

Next, all the people who sponsored and voted for this piece of shit, they will take credit for the defeat somehow and MAYBE do a new bill. Maybe, if it makes the Sierra club money.
