A Clarification

Posted by on Thu, Aug 20, 2009 at 4:08 PM

Last week on Slog, we made fun of a Sound Transit ad. It turns out our advertising designers modified an existing Sound Transit ad to fit our website, and in doing so, they cropped the image and introduced a typo. The Stranger's editorial department has nothing to do with the advertising department; we don't even know how it works, clearly. For reference, the original ad is here. Apologies to everyone.

Oh, yes the serious journalists at The Stranger would never dirty their hands with a basic understanding of how their salaries are paid.

Sloppy, very sloppy...

PS It is still a weird ad.

@2, that's how all newspapers work. To do otherwise is a conflict of interest.

Pretty tragic that your ad people are responsible for "yuor", though. Ouch. But yes, the hanging feet still look suicidal to me in the original.

I'm with Fnarf. It still looks like he's dangling tragically.

Actually, the full ad makes a lot more sense. The train represents the coming of The Lord, and all the righteous drivers are going to be called to Heaven during rush hour, creating a real headache of a traffic jam for the damned. We should have extra tow trucks out that day.

@ 4 I worked in a newspaper advertising department and am well aware of the barriers that need to be their to ensure editorial integrity. That being said members of newspaper's editorial departments claiming abject ignorance of how the business actually funds itself always rang a little false. They should avoid making any comments on the advertising, positive or negative, if they are to avoid conflict of interests.

#7, they increased the width of the ad and rewrote the text with a (now relatively) smaller font and different word wrapping. They actually copy/pasted the train and feet, too (and moved both up). You can tell because they copied them as rectangles, messing up the blue gradient of the sky. That probably wasn't noticeable in the paper, though. I didn't even notice it the first time they posted the edited ad online.
