As for showing your friends how you think black people look like monkeys...
I think you just showed all of us.

Is it Megan or Kelly (or you!) who says, "It's drinks o'clock!"

Thanks for all your hard work covering the election. Time for a well-deserved good night's sleep.

Ackham, do you know nothing about the not-so-distant history of racist caricatures? I suppose you think you're being delightfully contrarian, but really you're just being annoying.

In Arthur Miller's "The Crucible", a metaphoric play that parallels the Salem witch trials with the excesses of the McCarthy era, Tituba, the Indian Carib woman, says "Tituba don't truck with no devil". Is that racist? I've been wondering since 10th grade.

Christ, I would expect a stranger staffer to understand this age old point. Blaming the internet for this is equivelant to blaming the 1st amendment for hate speech, freedom of speech (including the internet) is not the problem here. We should protect the rights of these assholes to voice their racism.

@20 Are you?

I mean, what the FUCK?
There's no implied racism. It's a cartoonish mash-up of Will Smith. You're the one who called it a monkey.

Most people would have the good sense not to say shit like that. But you went there. Then you go ahead and blame the internet for what, exactly?

This was a shitty idea for a post. It comes across like you're trying to compensate for internalized white guilt by projecting it onto innocuous things and then condemning them.

If that's your thing, fine. Post a few more caricatures, screech racism, and blame history if you think it'll help prove how sensitive you are.

The only time I've ever seen someone on TV and thought, "wow, he looks like a monkey" was when I saw Dennis Kucinich on tv for the first time. And he's white. (also a very intelligent monkey.)

Yep, a cartoonish mash-up that eerily resembles common racial stereotypes.

The right-wing has no sense of the past because it's inconvenient to remember and no sense of the future because planning for the future means delaying gratification. Just a sense of now and how best they can make themselves feel - *right now*. It's a very hedonistic philosophy.

If thinking they're not racist means pretending a vast history of racial stereotyping doesn't exist, then that's what they'll do, history and facts be damned. They're liberal institutions anyways.

ha ha white guilt seattle liberals get to live with the fruit of their philosophies

Meanwhile blacks have committed at least 85% (eighty-five percent) of the murders in the Seattle area in the last few years, while only constituting about 8% (eight percent) of the population.

#24: That statistic is complete bullshit. White men commit the vast majority of violent crimes in Seattle and this country. Yes, black men commit crimes disproportionately (as would be expected for a group with high poverty) and have a much higher conviction rate -- but it's nowhere near 85% in Seattle. Black men make up about 45% of the national prison population, and they have higher conviction rates (especially for drug crimes) and have longer sentences than comparable white criminals.

@Lindy

I totally see it, but regrettably when you try to talk about racism on the internet a vocal minority will claim it doesn't exist. I mentioned White Privilege on Facebook a few weeks ago and a cousin came out of the woodworks denying that it exists while at the same time saying that "Black Culture" just makes black folks into thugs.

@23 - Everyone has selective history, even the people who cry racism and comment 28 is an excellent example.

In a tongue in cheek manner 28 is saying that hanging an effigy of Obama should be considered racist, which would be 100% true if effigies were solely used to represent the lynching of African Americans.

But that's not the case, effigies were used during the civil war, our revolutionary war, and the French Revolution. It is by no means an action exclusive to the history of African Americans in this world, (neither is slavery for that matter) which means that drawing a "it's racist because of our history" conclusion is not, "facts be damned", historically accurate.

Long and short: both sides pick and choose history to best fit their point of view.

@26 - actually, you are partially correct because the stat is more like half:

http://tinyurl.com/no5knk

From the article "List of 2008 homicides in Seattle" from the Seattle PI

selected from the list of the 28 Seattle homicides in 2008....

Allen Joplin, Jan. 4 -- black killed by black

De'Che Morrison, Jan. 10 -- black killed by black

Maurice "Moe" Allen Jr., Jan. 26 -- black killed by black

Degene Barecha, Jan. 30 -- black killed by black

Perry Henderson, Feb. 6 -- black killed by black

Stephan Dwaine Stewart, April 2 -- black killed by black

Eldora Earlycutt, July 4 -- black killed by black

James Paroline, July 10 -- white killed by black

Troy Peters, July 22 -- black killed by black

Pierre Lapoint, Aug. 5 -- black killed by black

Jane Kariuki, Oct. 16 -- woman of unknown race killed by black man named Christel D. Murphy

Quincy S. Coleman, Oct. 31 -- black killed by black

Edward McMichael, the "Tuba Man", Nov. 3 -- white killed by multiple blacks

Nathaniel Lee Thomas, Nov. 23 -- black killed by black

So by my count blacks (8% of Seattle) were the killers in at least half (that's at least 50%) of the murders in the Seattle area in 2008. At least five of the other murderers were latinos.

The numbers are actually worse for 2009 and do approach the 85% mark. Up to June there have been at least 5 murders in Seattle and in at least three of them the murder was black.

Just look at all the attention that Slog has given those two white lesbians who were raped and stabbed (one killed) by that black guy that your loony white-guilt courts let go!!!

Actually the only reason you even paid any attention to it was because they were lesbians, even going so far as shrieking about how it was an anti-gay hate crime, totally ignoring the more obvious possibility that if it was any kind of hate crime at all, it was a black-on-white hate crime.

Closet racists who can't work through their white guilt.

It's the politically-correct form of shouting "one two three NOT IT!!!"

Of all the celebrity caricatures on that FB ad, this was the only one that was so far distorted and grotesque... It doesn't even look like him other than the eyebrows -- and those weren't touched.

@38 bullshit like this? Bullshit like being aware of negative stereotyping and dehumanizing and calling it out, rather than just letting it pervade our culture because it was ok when we were kids? I suppose it's the same bullshit that keeps "Birth of a Nation" from being shown during Saturday morning cartoons... ;)

Yes this discussion about a stupid internet caricature generator got overblown.

This is not a case of seeing racism everywhere, but only where a famous black man is drawn as a caricature, with grotesque, offensive, and historically racially based exaggerations. All in the context of a facebook ad that normally has extremely accurate depictions of the person they seek to "make into a cartoon." Pointing this out, through irony or not, is not racist. That fucking advertisement is.

So it's ok to draw white politicians and celebrities with exaggerated features (eyes, noses, lips, ears, etc), political cartoons and Mad Magazine do it all the time. BUT it is not ok to do the same thing to black politicians and celebrities. Got it.
