Who Will Be Your Next City Council Members?

Posted by on Mon, Aug 17, 2009 at 3:47 PM

Nobody’s commissioned a big poll of city council candidates like we’ve seen in the mayor’s race and King County Executive’s race. And isn’t that what we need? Another damn poll?!! Your wishes have been granted.

Here's your late-afternoon survey to find out who—in a perfect universe where Slog is the entire electorate—will be our next city council members. As in all Slog polls, the results are legally binding:

Okay, now that you've said who you will vote for, who do you actually think will win?

It's a primary, so my picks to advance are Licata/Israel, Bagshaw/Bloom, and O'Brien/Royer.

I'm really worried that no one will know who any of the candidates in Position 8 are, and we'll end up with a hopelessly unqualified boob like Royer or Williams just because their names are familiar.

Who I voted for and who will win are the same (and apparently most agree with me):

Dorsol, Nick, and Mike.

That said, turnout is heavy in Republican areas of the county, and even in Seattle.

Get off your duffs and just send in the ballot or drop it off - you ran out of time.

Dorsal Plants has no chance at all ... such a herd of sheep here.

Nice guy, no experience, why not make him the next Gov.??

Maybe US Senator or a judge.... who needs experience at their job these days ... he would have fit in nicely in the Bush era to run FEMA, etc..... eeerrrr, I forgot, someone blew him at the Stranger ...

"When it comes to the city council, you want someone with life experience on the council, but you also want someone whose life experience mirrors the life experience of the people they represent. The fastest-growing demographic in Seattle is not 50- or 60-somethings with a lot of life experience. It’s people in their 20s and 30s. A lot of the issues we’re facing are not two-, three-, or five-year issues—they’re 20-year decisions. We’re going to be the people who bear the consequences of the decisions that get made now…. If [people my age] wait until we’re 'old enough' to deal with those issues, then we’re going to be dealing with the consequences in 20 years." --Dorsol Plants

@7 - don't forget people who have served in the military and understand that we impose democracy on the middle east at the point of a gun (ok, a bomb, but that doesn't sound as fun).

biggest group still needing to wipe snot most often are in their twenties

@ 9:

WTF? I'm old enough to be Dorsol's grandfather, and I totally support him! He's not running to represent only twentysomethings.

The median age in the US is 37. In Seattle it's 35. I like having old people on the council too, but there's nothing wrong with having some young people too.

Aarondia @6 -- quite agree! Here's how I vote: I simply tote up the candidates' years in public office and whoever comes out ahead, that's who I vote for.

Primary survivors will be Licata/Isreal, Bloom/Bagshaw, and Miller/Royer (or perhaps O'Brien - but my money is on the older voters who remember Royer's dad).

Advancing in 1/2nd place: Licata/Isreal, Bagshaw/Bloom, O'Brien/??? (this seems the only wild card: personally I love Bobby, but could see David Miller taking it - his campaign is really well organized - or Royer based on name recognition. I'll stop hedging and say Miller squeaks by)
