How Do They Do It?

Posted by on Mon, Aug 17, 2009 at 12:12 PM

The Obama administration continues to defend DOMA—the Defense of Marriage Act—in court, which is pissing off the gays. But after getting burned the last time they defended DOMA, the Obama administration has gone out of its way to describe the law as discriminatory and unfair and call for its repeal—just call for its repeal, mind you, not actually do anything about repealing it—which is pissing off the haters.

Dear Gays,

Please make us stop stabbing you in the back--we really can't help it. We hate that we have to use all of the resources at our disposal, including your own tax dollars, to ensure that you continue to receive mandatory discrimination and public ridicule.

Kisses,

Team Obama

P.S. Time for another donation! Send bigtime $$$$ plz.

Oh and just to save the Obamapologists' time:

He's tired, he's got a lot on his plate, I know we can change him, I walked into a door, I fell down the stairs, you fags sure were stupid to believe everything he spent two years telling you he would do, it's our job to make him and Congress do their jobs, blah blah blah blah blah blah.

Wait, OA, here's the unpatriotic anti-American Talibangelist response too: Obama is from Kenya and wants to turn America into a non-white-race nation subject to United Nations control while his space alien friends take control of our bodies - buy your Tin Foil Helmets quick!

How'd I do?

It boggles my mind that the Obama administration has not yet accepted the fact that the right will NEVER agree with anything he does. EVER. Doesn't matter if it improves the country, doesn't ever matter if it improves their own lives, everything this administration does will be evil, socialist, and destorying the country, simply because there's a black liberal Democrat in the Oval Office.

Dear President Obama,

Go ahead, repeal DOMA and DADT, ram through climate change legislation and health care reform, and stop fucking caring what the right thinks. They cannot possibly hate you any more than they already do.

Man, it's like some people thought the Change that Obama was talking about was all going to come from him. It's almost like they really just want to blame another figurehead and eschew personal responsibility. It's like these people think cultural change comes from the top down, dictated by the president. It's ALMOST like EVERYONE feels entitled to Obama's personal care. I can't imagine how hard it would be to be Obama when every special interest pusher in the US forgot about their own responsibility to ensure change.

It's all Obama's fault! Anyone who says different is a homophoba and an apologist! He hasn't fixed everythign because he is obviously an evil lying and corrupt politician. The fact that the world is a complex place, and that Obama has a fine line to walk between being called a dictator and a wafer boy (?) has NOTHING TO DO WITH THE FACT THAT OBAMA HATES GAYS.

@4 A+ Republicans whole story is that government doesn't work and they are always out to prove it. They're kind of like the evil stereotype anarchists in this way.
@9 That's what's called a false dichotomy.
And @10, I suppose that that may be a fact indeed, but I think that we can still pressure him to act in accordance with his fine campaign speeches. What's a homophoba?

But no, let's all blame the guy who we've shoehorned into an ideal of omnipotence, for being *GASP* less than all powerful. Yeah that's the way to garner support and REALLY change the world. Take it from me. I'm from the internet.

OA, it means a lot of bitching and whining about how we're put upon but no action. Oh, we can't let Olson/Boies go forward, that'll set us back, it's too early. We can't vote on Prop 8 now, it's too early. We can't march on washington, nobody will be there. We can't start a marriage initiative in Washington State, it's too early. We can't challenge DOMA or DADT, we don't have the support.

If we want someone else to do the heavy lifting, there's got to be an acknowledgment that ultimately we're on their timetable. Going the easy route often takes longer, and it's frequently disappointing.

Sadly, Obama will never please the Republicans. Politics is a career, and the primary goal is to keep your job, if you are able to bring around real change and accomplish your platform goals ... Well, that's just the frosting upon the cupcake which is your political career. Politicians need to know that their re-election is secure before they stick their necks out. Hence, why they are so happy to jump on board once public support is secure.

Personally, I'm often at loss to what I can do. I'm most fortunate to have representatives in both the House and Senate, who share my political ideals and support the repeal of DADT, DOMA and the passing of ENDA. My junior senator is a co-sponsor for the ENDA bill now in the Senate. I've even taken to checking out, Bilerico's Senator of the day (http://www.bilerico.com/), where they provide me the information to contact the undecided Senator of the day on ENDA. Besides, donating to ERW,BRO,HRC, etc., and talking the ear off of any Washingtonian I find about the importance of voting in favor of R 71 if it makes the Washington ballot (I'm still hoping that it will not have enough legitimate signatures). I'm at a freaking loss at what else do. It would be nice to have a wonderful Big Gay Brother/Sister, to point this rather clueless little straight sister in the right direction.

@25: Talk to people. That's how any great movement starts.

If someone says something ignorant, don't be afraid to engage them politely. If you have a story about a gay couple you know, don't be afraid to mention that fact without glossing over the key details like their names (as most people will drop the first names or casually dodge mentioning that the couple is same-sex). It's the casual dismissal of the GLBT community from the everyday that makes it easy for people to discriminate. Folks often don't think about it, they just expect that it's something the government will have to deal with and roll on with their lives, forgetting that it's their involvement in the political process and their choices at the ballot box that chart the course of tolerance and such.

Baconcat,

Thanks for the advice, love. I'm talking, and will continue to. I wish that there was more, at least I've got my 65+ dad realizing how harmful his vote in favor of Prop 8 was. And, I never thought he would ever make a 180, and my mom would forever have to cancel out his votes. I'm grateful for a little progress, but the issue of equality weighs very heavily on my heart. I often wish life came with instructions or a trail map, it's easier to climb a mountain if one knows the path to take. Of course, taking the path unknown does offer up the potential for awesome views of the surrounding range. Here's to the beauty that lies around the bend!

I don't really care what Obama does. As a Democrat, he's a member of a political party with a long and proud tradition of discrimination, bigotry, and double talk. What shocks me is that there are people in this county still stupid enough to believe that change comes from politicians and not from us here on the ground. Is there really anyone stupid enough to believe that Obama is only even talking about lgbt issues because us fags and dykes and everyone else here on the ground have been marching and protesting and making it an issue? Without our action, Obama would not say shit. Without our action, Iowa would not have legalized gay marriage. Without our action, DADT wouldn't even be on the agenda. The more we organize to change things ourselves, the more will Obama move, NOT the other way around. See you in DC on October 11.

The imminent defeat of health care reform is crushing my last sliver of hope. The lesson I learned in 1993 was "Republicans will call even the most modest health care reform socialist so you're better off pushing for single-payer, simplifying your message, and taking on the haters directly." In three words, "Medicare for all." Why mainstream Democrats like Obama can't do the math I have no fucking idea.

The failures of Obama on gay rights and torture policy I can understand individually even as they sicken me. But folding on health care exactly like Clinton folded 16 years ago, when a majority of the country hates insurance companies and is in favor of changing how we deliver health care? It's fucking unfathomable. It makes me want to run around screaming fuck fuck over and over again.

If I were to agree with you (and I do, at least in part), does that mean that we should not require or expect leadership from our highest elected official?

Did Obama & his campaign not (more or less) promise "leadership" on these controversial/non-controversial issues?

I'm confused about comments that suggest voters might be off-base for expecting leadership from the people who promise it...even if they are politicians.

One of the President's responsibilities is to defend the statue of constitutional law. He should make that clear to gay lobby groups, once and for all. He needs to tell them, look, want to redefine marriage? then take it to Congress. The President is just confusing and maybe alienating his pro traditional family base with these sort of accomodating words to homosexual groups, and it would be wise of him to realize that would be detrimental for him politically. Homosexuals as a voting block are almost insignificant, that's not the case with those who have safeguarded traditional marriage in a lawful way. DOMA was done with approval of the american people and their representatives in Congress and the President. Redefining it or any such attempt by gay advocate groups is an infringement on the rights of the people of those states that have banned gay marriage through the use of our democratic process. Mr President, defend the law of those states that have safeguarded the institution of marriage and don't pander to homosexual lobby groups, nothing you do short of infringing on the rights of the american people and subverting the law will please them. You really don't need them, but you sure need on your side people of faith who hold the traditional family as a basic pillar of our society.

And yes, remember Mr President that the real people of faith and who hold moral values such as not messing with the institution of marriage (one man and one woman) are in the Democratic party (throughout all states, some that are not solidly Democratic party states, NC, IN, OH, FL) not the repubicans. We were the ones who both made up your real strong base (when many homosexual were rooting for Hillary) and provided with the much needed determining votes that gave you your victory. Don't waste your blessings Mr President.

Who fucking cares? The left is full of complete retards who will drop every ounce of support for a president who doesn't wholly appease to even beck and call of Dan Savage. Now without any fucking support whatsoever from the left we're getting a overall shitty piece of health care legislation as a result.

But it's Obama that's the enemy! Slog told me so!

@15: Do you mean EQUATING homosexuality to bestiality and pedophilia? 'Cause a comparison could sound like this: "Unlike homosexuality, with bestiality there is no certain way to determine consent," or this "Like homosexuality, pedophilia involves an attraction to a non-hetero-normative person (i.e. someone not accepted in society-at-large as a 'suitable' sexual partner)." And there's really nothing wrong with comparing things that may be alike/unlike in various ways. Fun side note: the King James Bible gives a thumbs-up to bestiality and pedophilia while being ambiguously disapproving of male homosexuality (which makes the anti-gay comparisons all the more confusing, since they come from "Christian fundamentalists").

But back to Obama: he's the perfect compromise; nobody's happy. Were he elected as a centrist, I'd tell all of you haters to stuff a sock in it because you got what you asked for. But he wasn't - he was elected as a progressive, and he really needs to start acting like it. Hate away! (I promise it's not racism if it's based on his policy decisions)

To be honest I'm tired of the whole Obama Administration and the Democratic party as a whole. They are feckless pussies, they can't even hold onto the Public Option. At least when Republicans fuck over people they don't give a damn about public opinion. The irony is that the more the Administration cares about bipartisanship and public opinion the more they lose traction. Gone are the days of President Johnson, you either come along with him or get fucked.
