Glenn Beckwatch: Oh Shit

Posted by on Mon, Aug 17, 2009 at 3:04 PM

He who smelt it, dealt it.
A little less than a week ago, GEICO pulled its ads from the Glenn Beck Show after Beck called President Obama a racist. GEICO was quickly joined by three other advertisers, including Radio Shack.

Today, eight advertisers, including Wal-Mart, announced that they were pulling advertising from the Glenn Beck Show. This seems momentous for Beck. Beckheads could always boycott GEICO and Radio Shack, but there's no way that die hard Republicans are going to stop going to Wal-Mart. Are we going to see an apology from Glenn Beck? Or will the Glenn Beck Show be forced off the air? Either way, this is going to be incredibly entertaining.

Glad the gecko loves freedom.

That said ...

We need a poll about why people didn't vote in the primary:

1. because I was too busy watching cat, clown, and dog videos.
2. because I am still upset at DADT and DOMA and want my Republican overlords to get a win at my expense due to my snit.
3. stamps are expensive when you're on unemployment.
4. I didn't register to vote cause I'm too busy smoking pot.
5. I'm in the hospice with an incurable disease you insentive clod!

die-hard republicans already have beef with wal-mart for hiring mexican janitors (warning! that's a michelle malkin link). it's a miracle anyone shops there at all.

Okay, I guess I'll be the one to say it --

If advertisers are pulling their ads because they find the guy objectionable, fine. But if they're pulling their ads because they're worried about a boycott, I have some concerns about that; Democrats will be lucky to stay in power for 8 years. We'll have some kind of viable opposition party eventually and, when that happens, I hate to think of them using tactics like this to shut us down for saying inflammatory shit about the next Republican in the White House.

Holy crap. Just how evil do you have to be before Wal-Mart starts backing away?

blip, Cheapskate dumbasses (our nations biggest market segment) will always shop at Wal-Mart. Besides, in a lot of places, it's the only option.

Judah, I wouldn't be too worried about that. These "boycotts" are usually pretty innocuous. They may shut down a show (if we're lucky) but those same companies sponsor a variety of programs, on all sides of the spectrum.

I just want to see Beck have a breakdown on air. He's enough of a showman to pull it off.

Just as I don't want my ability to buy $1 wife-beaters compromised by some uppity 12-year-old Chinese seamstress's complaints about how uncomfortable it is to sit on a pile of used syringes while she works - I mean, come on, she's lucky to have a job - I also don't want it compromised by my favorite retailers advertising on more elitist cable channels, like the Food Network, or Cartoons for Pets.

@7. He'll have one at some point, but in Beck's case it's not showmanship, it's genuine fucking lunacy.

Judah's right: if we're not careful, the Republicans might turn into assholes.

While I don't agree w Beck's comment he has the same right to call Obama a racist as Kayne West did to call Bush one. I could imagine if there was a boycott to destroy West's career over his comment there would be a huge amount anger comming from 1st amendment supporters. Everyone remembers the anger over the Dixie Chicks being boycotted. Really. I am sick of the outrage anytime someone talks about Obama the same way some people freely talk about Bush. I passed UP Records office on Pine St and there is a sticker that says Bush and Chaney are war criminals. I mean, isn't calling Obama a racist also allowable?

ps- I voted for Obama

They aren't pulling their ads off completely, just moving them. They still pay for advertising on that shitty network, among others. Still, not a bad thing.

@15

Allowable, sure, just don't forget that words have consequences. Also, Bush & Cheney are war criminals, Obama is pretty clearly not a racist.

Time for some war crimes trials for Cheney, Rove, and Libby, that's for sure.

I doubt we'll get Bush.

@15: Freedom of speech is fine. It has nothing to do with freedom from pissing off the people who cut your paycheck. And ultimately, for Glenn Beck, that's the people who buy the products advertised during his show.

I don't get it. Don't those uber-conservative radio show hosts call pretty much everyone a racist? I know they've called Sotomayor one. And that Harvard professor. And practically everyone who Obama had any dealings with in his past.

So Beck calls Obama a racist and this is shocking why?

This is what happens when you grow up in Mt. Vernon, WA....you know why he's crazy right? His mom, sister, and first wife all committed suicide.

@15 - Preying on whites' fear of blacks has a more insidious history than preying on blacks' fear of whites. Shamelessly using a playbook from such a shameful period? That's just gonna look worse - sorry.

People. people. This is not a First Amendment issue. Glenn Beck can call Obama racist. Other people can call for a boycott against Beck. Advertisers can decide they don't want to be associated with Beck anymore. Or they can ignore boycott threats.

The 1st amendment concerns what the government can do. That is, the government cannot infringe upon your right to say stuff.
