The Fight Over Eco-Art

Posted by on Fri, Aug 14, 2009 at 11:05 AM

If you're in the Bay Area this weekend, check out what promises to be a heated discussion about eco-art headlined by sometime Stranger writer Katie Kurtz at the Headland Center for the Arts in Marin County.

Or if you can't make it, read this piece. Writer Gretchen Giles really delves into the heart of the matter—is eco-art, while well-intended, a fad?—through interviews with scores of smart artists. She gets the full spectrum of perspectives, from

"I don't see myself as an environmental artist," Christel Dillbohner explains... "I see myself more as a human being in the world, and there are many things that we have to consider..."

to

"We need to begin to look at art from a nonhuman perspective," says [Sam Brower]. "Fundamentally, if we're really talking about things that are supposed to help the earth, we need to look at art that the worms and the watershed would appreciate," he says.

Read the whole thing.

I so love Katie! Not convinced by her item 3, but she's on it nonetheless.

If you are into this sort of thing - putting the eco in your art - also go to Oakland's Swarm Gallery for a show featuring Seattle's Vaughn Bell.
