The Anti-Football

Posted by on Fri, Aug 14, 2009 at 1:59 PM

For some fucking reason, there is livestream of a Quake capture the flag tournament at Quakecon 2009.

There are commentators saying things like "he's going to grab the shard!" and "great rocket jump!"

I can't watch. It makes me feel queasy. It might actually be worse than soccer.

Just because you're a lousy soccer player and wouldn't know a real game when it hit you, doesn't mean you're qualified to comment on Quakecon games.

I forgot how terrible and uninspired Quake III was. I still played it, of course. I mean I was 15 when it came out for god's sake.

Everything's televised now.

Even mumblecore football.

You are wrong, the only thing more boring than soccer (to watch) is bowling

Something like this only has entertainment value if there's some sort of punitive leverage, e.g. the losing team gets pelted with horse whips by the winning team.

Bowling yourself is great, watching it on TV not so much

Myself, I've never understood spectator sports.

Magic the effin' Gathering on ESPN? They must be desperate. I'd rather watch chess tournaments.

Regarding soccer/football, I thought the only reason to watch was to see the mid-game riot.

Regarding any first-person shooter, they'd be much cooler to watch if they showed the tournament from observer cameras. At least then it'd look like a legitimate arena game.
