Youth Pastor Watch

Posted by on Thu, Aug 13, 2009 at 2:33 PM

Pennsylvania:

Christopher Krpata, 38, a former youth pastor who lived in Myerstown, was sentenced to three years of county probation on an obscenity law violation in December 2007. He also has to complete sex offender treatment, said Jen Gettle, deputy Dauphin County district attorney.

Krpata, who pleaded guilty, was accused of violating the obscenity law for displaying pornographic materials on his laptop while others were present, Gettle said.... Krpata's record involving "peeping tom" and related offenses goes back a dozen years. He was found guilty of exposing himself to a Lebanon Valley College student in 1997, taking pictures of a partially clothed woman in a dressing room in the Harrisburg Mall in 2000, prowling on the back porch of a North Cornwall Township house in 2001 and invading privacy in the dressing-room area of the Jubilee store in Lebanon in 2002.

New Jersey:

Robert Kevin Carlino, 32, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Noel L. Hillman to one count of possession of child pornography.... Carlino, former youth minister at the Malaga Assembly of God, remains free on $50,000 bond. Carlino is alleged to have used the computers to access an invitation only Internet forum called "Incest Taboo," which is a collection of links to various incest chatrooms and used primarily to share and comment on child pornography.

Carlino is alleged to have downloaded onto one of his computer hard drives a folder that contained a total of 134 images of child pornography. All 134 of the images involve the same prepubescent female, who was 9 when the images were taken.

Arizona:

A 15-year-old girl, who says she was molested [at age 13] by a Tucson youth minister takes the stand today. Christopher Decaire, 49, is now on trial facing multiple charges, including sexual abuse of a minor, sexual conduct with a minor and child molestation.

He worked part-time at the Eastside Tucson Baptist Church.... The victim was 13 when the incidents allegedly occurred. She claims they were primarily in the youth building; some in the kitchen. "He put my shirt down, unzipped his pants.... put his penis in my mouth."

Also introduced as evidence was a taped recording of a phone conversation between the victim and youth pastor. In the taped recording, Decaire says, "You can't tell you, can't say anything, you can't, I don't care what she knows, you can't say anything. Oh God."

People with access to kids and young people commit these offences - not the 'predatory homosexuals' berated from the pulpit. Distraction much?

It's interesting to me that so many of these are *former* youth pastors. It's not always clear from the stories whether they've resigned as a result of their conduct becoming public or whether they resigned before they were caught. I could go looking for details, but don't really want to dig further into most of these stories. The short summaries here make me nauseous enough.

What concerns me, though, is that, whether or not they're now still youth pastors, these were people who apparently sought opportunities to work with children. I know not everyone who wants to work with children is a potential scumbag--in fact it's probably a very small percentage who really are scumbags. Unfortunately this reflects badly on people who genuinely want to work with children for the right reasons.

It saddens me to read these articles. Firstly because these predators are labelled in the same way as gay men in these circles. Maybe if these individuals had an opportunity to have a satisfying sexual relationship they would not be preying on young children, but this is frequently an issue that is addressed in these circles.

I live in the Lebanon, Pennsylvania area, and let me tell you--"invading privacy" in the dressing area of the Jubilee store takes a sick mind. It's a thrift store, and we do not have hipsters in Lebanon, PA. I mean, you are not going to find Beauty2K-compliant people to ogle in the Jubliee dressing room. If you get off on "invading privacy" in that context, the thrill has to come purely from knowing you are looking at someone without their knowledge or consent, not because you're looking at something that is alluring in any way, shape, or form.
