Posted by on Tue, Aug 11, 2009 at 12:04 PM

I know you're still reeling from yesterday's revelations that Seattle School Board candidate Betty Patu claimed an not-fully-achieved Master's Degree on her resume, while fellow Seattle School Board candidate Kay Smith-Blum claimed a double major when really she just took a bunch of extra classes. But I must know what you think.

What else is Betty Patu hiding?

I know people are making a big deal about claiming to have minor when in fact they only took extra classes but many colleges, including UW, do not offer a Minor degree even though someone takes most of the core level classes beyond the scope of their primary degree. I certainly have no problem with someone stating they have a minor as long as they took a significant amount upper level coursework since many colleges call it a minor but many do not.
No problem with it as long as she completed her primary degree and she went beyond the introductory level courses that only satisfy one's general Arts & Sciences requirement.

These polls are rapidly becoming irrelevant - little more than a competition to see which snarky one-liner gets the most yuks and chuckles.

Maybe that's the point. Sure. I get it.

But it's starting to feel like the poll-writer's not even into it anymore.

I think she was saying she had a MAJOR in statistics, just because she took some extra classes, not a minor.

@1 - people also tend not to remember that they change the program details year to year, as departments and degrees change.

On the other hand, most teachers have Masters degrees, so it is kind of important.
