Freaky Babycreatures

Remember this one?

I just found this one, by Hogarth, dated 1733 and called Gerard Anne Edwards in His Cradle. Horned baby being stared down by ferret?

And then there's this one, also by Hogarth and from 1730. No comment is necessary.

Now I realize the mini-adult theme is common in early paintings of children, but some—these, just to show a few—go beyond the call of historical duty. I wish there were a blog devoted to this category of image.

Jen,
William Hogarth is one of my favorite painters. I saw his work at the Tate Gallery in London many years ago.

Here's a particular dandy entitled "Canvassing for Votes":

It's featured on the cover of the works of Samuel Johnson (paperback) which I possess.

The one in the ferret painting reminds me too much of The Exorcist. Looks like its head is about to spin around.
