The Morning News

Posted by on Mon, Aug 10, 2009 at 8:10 AM

Fit to Print: Seattle Times executives claim the paper is turning a profit, having automatically converted most former print subscribers of Seattle P-I. Blethen tells NYT subscriptions are up 30 percent.

You're Either With The Douchebags or You're Against Them: Anti-bag fee plastic lobby—which has contributed $1.4 million to defend pollution—makes this Seattle's costliest election ever.

Patriot Missive: Pelosi and Hoyer issue op-ed calling disruptions to health care meetings "un-American."

These tactics have included hanging in effigy one Democratic member of Congress in Maryland and protesters holding a sign displaying a tombstone with the name of another congressman in Texas, where protesters also shouted "Just say no!" drowning out those who wanted to hold a substantive discussion.

These disruptions are occurring because opponents are afraid not just of differing views — but of the facts themselves. Drowning out opposing views is simply un-American.

Asleep at the Helm: FCC chairman blames Bush Administration for missing the boat on national broadband plan.

You Can Lead a Horse to Water: Suspected drug dealer who went through Seattle's new intervention program last week arrested the next day for alleged drug crime.

Taliban: Gaining ground in Afghanistan; US plans to double troop levels by end of the year.

Religion: Numerous bombings kill 48 people and injure hundreds in Iraq in endless sectarian violence.

The Price of Protest: Iranians marching in election uprising were raped and tortured in prison. Ahmadinejad purges government of officials who opposed brutality of the crackdown.

Wreckage: Crews pull seven bodies out of Hudson River from airplane and helicopter collision on Saturday.

Winds: Typhoon slams Taiwan at 73 miles per hour.

Weather: More Americans doubt global warming.

The number of Americans who say the media have exaggerated global warming jumped to a record 41 percent in 2009, up from 35 percent a year ago. The most marked increase came among political independents, whose ranks of doubters swelled from 33 percent to 44 percent. Republican doubters grew from 59 percent to 66 percent, while Democratic skeptics stayed at around 20 percent.

Wonder Woman: Clinton heads to Congo on campaign against rising sexual assaults.

Credible: After her "death panel' accusations, Sarah Palin asks public to "stick to a discussion of the issues" in health care debate. "Let's not give the proponents of nationalized health care any reason to criticize us," she says.

Global warming won't be "real" until we lose a few more major US coastal cities.

And that 103 we had in Seattle a couple of weeks ago? Nothing to worry about, that's what the rest of the country calls summer you wimpy liberals!!! Oh and the freak amount of snow we had back in December: check out "winter" on the internets!!

*we are soooo screwed.....soooooooo screwed we don't even know how screwed we are*

I don't believe in global warming either...global climate change I have no doubt is real. We should use the correct phrases with the rabble.

Just another day when the news on health care makes me want to take a hot knitting needle and poke my own eyes out.

Not that I could afford the subsequent doctoring.

Fuck. Pelosi does an op-ed. The people being persuaded to jump on the other end of the see-saw don't read op-eds, Nancy. Put on a schmatte, roll up your sleeves, get out in the trenches, and fight... you and your other timid congressional colleagues.

I don't believe in melting glaciers, disappearing polar ice caps, rising sea levels, increasingly intense hurricanes, generally more-extreme weather extremes, or mountains of scientific evidence accumulated over several decades by apolitical scientists from all over the world. I don't believe in them, therefore they don't exist. See how easy that is? This is why I am proud to be a Republican. Ask me about health care.

@6 did you read the article?

"Just one day after 16 drug dealers were told by Seattle police to go straight or go to prison, one was arrested for an alleged drug crime Friday night in a section of the Central Area that police are trying to clean up.

The accused dealer had participated in a Thursday night 'intervention' at which police, prosecutors, family members, friends and neighbors told the dealers they would no longer tolerate their open-air drug sales."

One of the dealers was arrested on unrelated charges before the meeting, which is why he didn't show. That's who you're thinking of.

I'd like Golob's opinion here, but if I were polled and the question was "Have the media exaggerated global warming?" my answer would probably be yes. That's not to say global warming (climate change) is not both real and an imminent danger. It is both. But I think it can also be pointed out that the media often engage in hyperbole and when global warming is reported it is sometimes in a very doomsday way that might not be 100% accurate.

If our cooler summers and warmer winters are "climate change," then I'm all for it.

And living in a coastal city isn't all itss cracked up to be anyway. But don't worry, the earthquakes will get you guys long before the flooding does.

Yup, the democratic leaders write an op ed that after considering all sides of the issue and presenting well reasoned arguments, deign to call the right wing unAmerican.

I'm starting to think we need a communist party here. That's what they had in Europe. It pressured the social democrats to get shit done and it scared the right wingers to accept basic fairness in society.

You don't make a well reasoned argument something is unAmerican. You freaking blast them as unAmerican and repeat it 10000000 times from every bully pulpit you've got, you do that for 50 years, and you also tell them they're beeing made fools of by the corporate interests, like Sean Penn in the Huey Long movie, and you stop all this pussy footing around, and yes, god damn it, you organize your people to go to meetings and simply dominate the others through being present, civilly, instead of the lame organizing for america brilliant idea that we in Seattle should all call up McDermott and ask to make an appointment for a little office visit with his staff to, you know, bring him on board via-s-vis health care reform.

They defined everything democratic as wasteful, lazy, shiftless, perverted and unAmerican for 50 years. We let them do this to us.

Nickels makes far more than $1.4 million on his own. He just, like any savvy politician, doesn't report all of it... just what he has to.

They used to get the Seattle Times.

People have given up on them.

The Seattle Times is "turning a profit" b/c they are selling most of their real estate in south lake union. Good thing someone had foresight awhile ago to buy up some land, eh, Times.
