The Seattle Times has two solid editorials this weekend. The first comes on the heels of news that anti-gay Referendum 71 is looking more likely to make the ballot. The Times says that, despite a lawsuit filed by conservative Christians who want to keep their bigotry anonymous, the names of people who signed the petition should be available to the public:
Referendum and initiative petitions are public records and must remain so. People who sign such petitions are engaging in the legislative process.Attempting to make, amend or stop a law is the most public of civic business.
The government cannot block the names of people who sign petitions out of a vague, undefined fear of what might happen.
The second editorial, in case you missed it Friday night, is an endorsement to approve Referendum 1, the bag fee. "Plastic and paper bags have never been free. Consumers pay for them. And they pay for the consequences of their presence in the garbage and waste stream," the paper says. Good work, Fairview Fanny. At this rate, we might even forget about those blowjobs you gave Dino Rossi.
