No Apology

Posted by on Thu, Aug 6, 2009 at 11:50 AM

6ec5/1249584396-romney.jpgBecause President Obama is all about the endless, un-American "tour of apology," Mitt Romney has taken it upon himself to do what no other conservative has ever done! In a book set to be published next year, he's going to explain how amazing and perfect America really is. The title? "No Apology: The Case for American Greatness."

Liberals who whine about America have not spent any serious time anywhere else.

@1 you can love something and realize it has flaws.

It takes a big man to admit he's wrong or has made mistakes.

Which probably explains why the national GOP is populated by impotent wusses lately.

@1 I have, and I still whine about America. In fact it is that perspective that has shown my how fucked this country can be.

@5: I think it came out already. It was directed by D.W. Griffith, and I think it was called "The Birth of a Nation".

@1: I'd be willing to bet that liberals are more well traveled than conservatives, especially once you factor out military "travel" and zero immersion tours (like a cruise ship) where you are never really exposed to a foreign culture.

@1 "America is perfect in every way" is another way of saying "I don't have any good ideas to offer the country".

It's conservatives who are always whining. Whining and bullying. The last election proved Americans are sick of them. And all their whining will do them in in the next election too.

If you think that your country is chosen by some cloud being this really should not come as a shock to you.

No, no, wait, there's something to what #1's saying. I mean, if you don't love the country -- which includes, among other things, liberals, abortionists, rednecks, murderers, immigrants, the handicapped, gay men, gun nuts, lesbians, lesbian gun nuts, conservative Christians, Zionists, Birthers, utopianists, writers and dandies, blacks, Latinos, Muslims, Buddhists, Quakers, trannies, stoners, libertarians, librarians, thugs, mugs, pugs, slugs and Methodists, and has since before the Revolution -- and all of its insane and righteous diversity, why would you stay here?

Even leaving that aside, America does tolerance -- of minority ethnic groups, the mentally and physically handicapped -- way better than most of the world. If it seems like we don't, that's because we have a much more heterogeneous population than lots of places. Racism doesn't seem like such a big deal in, say, Europe because Europe's a lot more monolithically white than America is. Look at the shitstorm the wave of Arabic immigrants is kicking up in France or Denmark. If you're in a wheelchair or have mobility issues in Russia, forget it. You're never leaving your apartment. Our gay rights record's behind some places, but on the other hand you can have things like the Folsom Street Fair and not get decapitated by the state, too.

It's a deeply flawed country in a lot of ways -- puritanical, self-righteous, loud -- but it's still a rad party and I'm glad to be here for it.

most of the bitching about murka boils down to this: live up to our ideals as clearly expressed in the declaration and constitution.

PROVIDE FOR THE GENERAL WELFARE.
LIFE LIBERTY AND THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS.

Mitt Romney is a fucking douchebag. He should be required to call every American citizen and personally apologize for his douchebaggery.

@11

@1 never said :"America is perfect in every way".
America is, however, the best thing going on this planet.

Thank you for your comments, Slog.
Predictable responses.

No one, I notice, offered any alternatives for the title of "Greatest Nation on Earth", however-
(mind you, Mitt did not claim America was the greatest; but I will...)

What nation provides it's people a greater opportunity to achieve their potential, to pursue happiness, to pursue their dreams?

What nation has been a greater force for good in the world, a greater inspiration to all mankind?

America is not perfect.
But the ideals we strive for are nobler than those of any other nation.
To the extent that the American people honor and accept those ideals work to fulfill them we ARE a great nation.

@22, 23:

All vigorous flag-waving aside, there's room for improvement in this country. At issue is whether or not it's okay to admit that, and nothing else.

America constantly talking about how awesome it is reminds me of a plain child's mother constantly reassuring it that it is attractive. Repeating something doesn't magically make it true. Face it, you are middling - you have some of the benefits of Canada and European countries, but with more loadmouths making empty statements, and with worse healthcare and less evolved civil rights).

I've had the wonderful opportunity to live in another country (Australia) and visit many others and would never vote the US the best country in the world, but would say it's AMONG the best in the world. Why must the statement (America is the best...) be stated so emphatically anyway? A little humility is always more attractive. Just ask our Canadian neighbours. They are adorable...
