Witnesses to an assault in Cal Anderson Park over the weekend told police that a gang of young men has been randomly attacking drunk and vulnerable people in the park, a police report says.
On August 1, police were called to Cal Anderson on 11th and Pine around 10:30 p.m. after someone called 911 to report a group men beating up another man in the north end of the park.
When officers arrived, they found the victim of the assault sitting near the fountain in the park. Initially, the man told police "nothing happened and that he fell," the report says, telling officers that he was from Poland, did not want to give his name and did not want the police involved. Medics arrived on scene and treated the man, who had small cuts on his face, chest, knees, and hands.
Although the man initially didn't want to talk to police, he discovered his wallet was missing and opened up to the officers. The man, who is in his 40s, told police he was walking through the north end of the park when a group of males jumped him. Two of the men—described in the report as a white male and a black male, both between 18 and 21 years old—punched him, knocked him to the ground, and kicked him, the report says.
A witness at the scene told officers he believed the Polish man had been targeted at random and was "horrified by the brutality." Another witness told police they have seen the gang of men in the park many times before and that "they pick fights with vulnerable or intoxicated victims." The witness also said the men are usually in Cal Anderson Park around sundown or before the park closes at 11:30 p.m.
