Youth Pastor Watch

Posted by on Mon, Aug 3, 2009 at 11:46 AM

West Virginia:

b84e/1249323931-ypwsteinbrecher.jpgA Mingo County man who says he is school bus driver and youth minister is facing a charge of soliciting a minor via computer. Steve Steinbrecher of Kermit was being held Friday in the Southwestern Regional Jail. Bail is set at $100,000.

West Virginia State Police accused the 38-year-old man of attempting to seduce a 17-year-old girl by sending her instant messages through the social networking Web site MySpace. Steinbrecher, known as Philbilly on MySpace, lists his occupation as a part-time school bus driver. He also says he is a youth minister at Jenny’s Creek Gospel Church.

Alabama:

278d/1249324273-ypwwebb.jpgDozens of supporters awaited outside the Hugo Black Federal Courthouse as William David Webb arrived for sentencing. Webb was not alone as he was joined by his wife and his father the church's Senior Pastor William Scott Webb.

Once inside, Judge Scott Coogler honored the plea agreement reached in May. William David Webb will serve 60 months in federal prison for [transporting a 15-year-old girl across state lines for the purpose of sexual activity] and pay a small penalty to his victim.

Dan,

If you haven'tread it yet read "The Family" by Jeff Sharlet. But don't read it at night; it will really scare the shit out of you. And the author was on Bill Maher Friday night.

Yes indeedy. A youth pastor whose name means "really likes." Shouldn't "right up my alley" have been bolded as well?

Alabama boy wanting to show this girl his "small penalty" is what started the trouble in the first place. What a perfectly formed ironic circle.

@4 "aime beaucoup" would mean "really likes." Bien-Aime, on the other hand, means well-loved. I still don't think any of the irony is lost.

And I have to wonder how they pronounce his name in Naples.

@2...you'd have to cut off their hands, too, to fully incapacitate them.

Steve Steinbrecher's MySpace page is great:

"I do love being around people and love knowing that people trust me with their children on a regular basis.....I could never take that lightly......"

It gets better:

"I thank God every day for the heart he has given me and hope that I can be a godly influence on everyone I come in contact with........"

His interests: "I also like reading my Bible and studying it."
and "O'Reilly Factor".

The reason we can't castrate convicted predators, Fifty-Two-Eighty @2, is because it would qualify as cruel and unusual punishment, though ironically, no less cruel than our current, increasingly outsourced prison system, which we tolerate both due to a popular primal sense of vengeance and because we don't have much in the way of a practical better idea.

We are considering chemical castration as a form of rehabilitation, but the only way we can get predators on such a program is to have them declared not guilty by reason of insanity, and like a fox with grapes, contemporary US society is really reluctant to call a child predator innocent, even if we know he's biochemically compelled.

"Soliciting a minor by computer" is a crime, even when having sex with said minor isn't? Seventeen is above the age of consent in West Virginia. If the fat, creepy guy had actually had sex with her, all they could have done is fired him, but since he asked her for sex via computer, they can press charges? Please tell me that this legislation spawned by the neurotically technophobic is a phenomenon isolated in West Virginia.

Fifty-two eighty: maybe ALL school bus drivers who own computers should be castrated.
