Mayoral Straw Poll

Posted by on Fri, Jul 31, 2009 at 2:08 PM

3c34/1249074191-crown.jpgLater this afternoon, The Stranger will post a cheat sheet of our endorsements for the August 18 Primary Election (for those folks planning fill out their ballots this weekend). Our complete endorsements will come out early next week. But in the meantime, here's a legally binding straw poll on who Slog wants to be Seattle's next king:

Burying Mallahan far down the ballot, below the cranks, I see. Wasn't that an old tactic of the Chicago Democratic machine, intended to make reform candidates' names hard to find?

@7 why do you want a tunnel? Four billion bux buys us a half mile of tunnel thats gonna take 8 years to build! Plus they're gonna have to re-route traffic for those 8 years anyway....
Imagine what we could do with that money? Think of all the light rail we could build!

I want a tunnel because I want to get rid of the viaduct and can't really believe that anyone in charge of a state budget will ever try the mystical surface/transit option.

@11

You hit it on the head. 99 is a state highway. The state has already made it clear that a surface/transit option alone is not going to work for them (i wish this wasn't the case, and i think so does Nickels). And i'm still not clear on how McGinn is going to head down to Olympia as a newly elected mayor and somehow bring the governor and the state legislature to their knees on this...

I really like the idea of not having a mayor for 4 years and see if life actually is better. Money says it would be.....

@11/@14...
overwhelmingly, people of seattle do not want this tunnel. the state needs to be negotiated with. they have made it clear that the surface/transit option will not fly with them. now, our elected leaders need to tell the state that the tunnel will not fly with us!
if any mayor of seattle refuses to sign off on the tunnel, it will not be built. period.

time to stand up kids!

@16

That's a very nice call to action and all, but maybe we've forgotten this whole past decade that we've spent negotiating with the state on this. This tunnel shit didn't just fall out of the sky overnight. This was the result of years and years of back and forth. Too many years, if you ask almost anyone around here. Meanwhile, tens of thousands of people risk their lives each day driving along the viaduct, hoping the regions tectonic plates can just chill out for a little while longer, or at least until they're off that god-forsaken pile of concrete and rebar.

It would be very hard to be a popular politician in the middle of this economic climate. I've been happy with lots of what Nickels has done, and I really don't see a compelling reason to vote for anyone else.

I am shocked that this differs from the neocon votes on the Seattle Times endorsement poll for Seattle Mayor.

OK, maybe not that shocked.

@17
tens of thousands of people risk their lives everyday just by riding in an automobile.... aren't we fighting to get people out of their cars in the first place?
i refuse to let this city make a horrible mistake.
nickels follows the trend of the majority of Washington state democrats.... soft ball corporate "progressives"....
they can take their tunnels and their co-op health initiatives and take it all down to arkansas.
WE are trying to get shit done in the city, the country, the world....
i urge you to re-connect with your fighting spirit!

Light rail costs 2 billion dollars for 14 miles and ten stations. The tunnel has no downtown exits and costs 4 billion dollars. We need to get our priorities strait! Vote Mike Mcginn!

Though I completely support NO viaduct AND NO tunnel, I think McGinn is a big BSer. I'd like to hear HOW he plans to stop the tunnel. In fact, I'd like to hear any actual plans he has for the city and would rather not hear again and again what he's done in the past.
