Judging a Candidate for School Board by Her Penmanship

Posted by on Fri, Jul 31, 2009 at 11:50 AM

We're not publishing our primary endorsement picks until today at 4:55 pm. That's more than five hours away. What will you do until then? How many times will you hit refresh? For now, enjoy the penmanship of one of the candidates for school board. This letter just arrived in the mail. Bethany Jean Clement suggests that the pitched angle of the lines and the erratic use of upper-case Es as lower-case es suggests a crazy mind. "I like it," Lindy West counters.

Gosh, a handwritten thank-you note written by the actual candidate and not typed up by a staffer looks rather refreshing to me.

She's totally into you, dude!

Seriously, the hand-written note is a nice gesture. Judge her on that not on the penmanship.

The erratic frequent use of extended hyphens instead of period marks suggests that her tits are made of solid gold, but, like BJC, I am not trained in handwriting analysis, so it doesn't matter what either of us think.

#1 - Spot on.

hey slog staff: can we get a mayoral straw poll this afternoon before you announce your endorsements?

Handwriting analysis is too nebulous a thing to judge a person by.

Could you, rather, post all the candidate's star charts, instead?

Superfluous use of quotation marks = school district candidate fail. Next.

Handwringing over handwriting? Yet another reason I can never run for public office.

I like it, too. She has flair.

Looking at the handwriting, I can say the author would cheerfully unload a full mag of 9mm rounds into wild pit bulls trying to eat small kids.

So the author has my vote.

"hope you guys support me" or "hope you gays support me"?

@11 That is exactly what I was wondering!

GOODSPACEGUY for King County executive!!!

his name is GOODSPACEGUY.

I'm guessing it's going to be Bagshaw-Israel-O'Brien for city council, McGinn for mayor, Holland-Vekich for port, and Constantine for executive.

I voted Nickels, but I'm still undecided about county exec, leaning towards Philips.

also, yes on bag tax (why not a tax now and a ban later? no need to delay!)

and ellington for court of appeals, which is pretty much a no-brainer if you have seen her opponent's campaign.

I like my plastic bags like I like my women, untaxed and banned in most places.

She uses the regular, lowercase cursive e when the final stroke on the proceeding letter is at the base of the line. If the final stroke is at the midline, then it's the upper case "epsilon" e. So it's internally consistent. And yeah, I think it is gays. Look at the u in "you" versus the first and second a's in "campaign."

I'm glad she took the time to send a handwritten note. And I dig the flow of her handwriting--straight lines, fairly uniform letters, and I'm partial to the big loops on the G and Y and the way she writes her S and F.

All that said, look at her crazy Ps. 7 of them, and maybe 2 are similar. They overlap and overwhelm the words. Subtle, though. I bet she'd be surprisingly great in a bar fight.

I was just going to say, I love her P's, especially the cracked-out one in "camPaign."

Aw, the e's remind me of my mom's. You need to get out more, penmanship-wise.
