Meanwhile in Los Angeles

Posted by on Wed, Jul 29, 2009 at 8:29 PM

It's a cool and comfortable 73 degrees outside, there's a nice breeze blowing through Santa Monica Boulevard, and this is a half a block from my hotel...

In Seattle-area news: University bridge is closed. Or open. Or closed. It depends on whether you were planning to go over the bridge or under it. This just in from SDOT:

With extreme temperatures causing an expansion of its steel and concrete components, the University Bridge will remain in the closed position to prevent damage from an opening. While the bridge is available for motor vehicle traffic, it will not be opened for marine traffic through the night. The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) will leave the bridge in a closed position overnight to prevent any structural damage and adverse impacts to emergency response.

I was out of town during the WTO demonstrations too. I always miss the fun stuff.

I was about to say "um, this is not fun" and then I noticed the obvious sarcasm.

Lucky bastard.

It's rare that I miss my hometown, but today I envy LA's weather. Oh well, "we'll weather the weather, no matter the weather, whether we like it or not"- Maurice Sendak. I'm going to weather my 107 degrees with some whiskey and ice, and try not to envy your 73 degrees and air-conditioned hotel room. Lucky guy.

This extreme weather caused one of my thermal windows to break. The glass on the interior side has a long crack from top to bottom. It's sort of like a Sci-Fi movie this event, only it's real.

The windshield on my city issued plug-in Prius cracked. Is that an omen?

Oh, and btw Dan Dearest - I hate you ;-)

At the epicenter of the drugged out LA club scene, don't be surprised. Just wait for the ambulances around 2 tomorrow night. (Also, note the absurd number of froyo establishments.)

Though yes, LA has magnificent whether. I'm going to miss it in Boston.

@3, 9: does anyone from Seattle read Slog anymore?

I don't quite know how to read this story. On one level, I get that we've underfunded infrastructure projects for far too long. But, are our bridges really that brittle that a few degrees warmer temperature are threatening them? Or, is SDOT playing that card to underscore that we've neglected funding for infrastructure? Alas, who can know?

@10 I guess not, although most seem to have some connection to the city. Me, I was born in Seattle, but haven't lived there for many years, but still have many connections to the area.

Not 'pure' enough for you? Tough shit, troll.

@10: Every literate person left Seattle long ago.

(whee I'm a troll now too!)

@9, I don't know what you're talking about. I live around the corner from that place, and WeHo simply isn't the epicentre of a "drugged out club scene." Sure, it's the gay ghetto, with lots of gay bars, but clubs are few and far between, and LA's generally is no more druggy than any other major city, at least that I've visited.

But, of course, no one ever lost votes for ragging on LA.

It may be cool and in the 70s, but it's gloomy and grey. Sort of like Seattle is all the time;-). Thank gods the clouds burn off by mid morning. Say what you like about LA, 350 days of sun a year isn't a bad thing. But maybe I say that having lived 18 years in Canada and 5 in England.

Ah, that explains the crowd of glowering yacht people in Portage Bay this morning.

And the University Bridge isn't "brittle," it just swelled (like everyone at your 10th high school reunion--thank you, Joan Cusack!).

Great, Dan, now that I know you're in LA, I'm going to have to track down that dispensary (which would be no small feat if you had not conveniently included the street) and find your hotel.
