I Love New York Deli's Second Location

Posted by on Wed, Jul 29, 2009 at 3:56 PM

...it's open, where the beloved Continental Store European Delicatessen used to be in the U District. The I Love New York Deli is pretty much the only thing that could've taken over that space without it being a full-on sandwich tragedy; as it is, the change seems like a poetic, beautiful thing.

Slog tipper Caroline says:

Just went in, got a huge delicious sandwich, great retail Jewey stuff, fresh bread, all the good smoked fishes, pastrami sliced to order, absolute awesomeness. Super duper friendly folks.

Go.

No more Continental?!?!?!?? NNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Their feta and pesto omelet was one of the only reasons I got out of bed when I lived on the Ave.

I'll miss the random German knick-knacks, candy, and things Continental sold, but I guess I won't cry over it.

I can't wait to try it, but I Love New York seems to have really inconsistent reviews online...

@4, Different Continental, I think (you're referring to the Greek restaurant on University Way at about 47th, correct? The new place is at Roosevelt and 53rd or so, and I'm pretty sure it's also different ownership/management)

I'm amused you guys keep using my picture of their sandwich given that I really wasn't impressed by it. Good picture, though...

I'm an Italian man with deep appreciation for Italian food as well as east coast food. However, I never understimate what people have to offer. Until you have actually tried the food at the I Love New york Deli and have spent the time talking to Job Jacobs, a Jewish New Yorker who is always on his feet and has the craziest stories to tell you, you will never appreciate what his deli has to offer. From the pastrami, corned Beef, roast Beef, the famous east coast soda (Dr. Browns) and drakes cakes, wise potato chips, seafood and what not, all shipped directly from Brooklyn, NY weekly, you truly have to stop and realize that what Job Jacobs is doing,is bringing New York and it's tastes to those who have lived there in the past, those who have always wanted to go, as well as those who simply will never make it to the Big Apple. I've had probably more Corned Beef and Pastrami than most 20 year old's should ever have, and his stuff is Grade A, top of the line, 100% Authentic. Everything's sliced to order, he has fresh Jewish Rye breads every morning, and who can beat the Sinatra music playing on his speakers all day?? I end this note by saying DO NOT go into either of his two deli's with a closed mind thinking your going to change the way his sandwhiches are made. That's a big no no! if you want something healthy to eat, grab a knish!
