Father Love

Posted by on Wed, Jul 29, 2009 at 1:52 PM

This stock image from Getty is used for a story about "how to save your marriage from your kids."
Picture_12.png What does the main meaning of the image (incest—father making out with his daughter) have to do with the meaning in the story? What is the connection? As for the boy, he is clearly the young woman's brother and the old man's son. And where is the mother in this picture? I believe she is dead. Her body is in the ground. Roots pierce her rotting flesh. Her corpse is making that grass grow and grow. Her spirit has just departed. It is with those distant clouds. It is heading toward the sun. Lot, too, has enjoyed this type of motherless (daughter-blissed) paradise.

Charles, you shouldn't drink red wine when it's so hot outside.

Here's another set of questions. What does it mean that Charles has interpreted the image, which is clearly that of a husband and wife kissing, to be a father and daughter? What factors may have led to this interpretation?

Charles -- listen carefully. You are suffering from heat stroke. Go soak your head.

It's about saving your second marriage. You have to discard the first (child-bearing) wife after she has popped out a couple and gotten fat and shrewish.

It's official: Charles Mudede is overcome by the heat.

Yes, I agree... having that response is much more telling than a stack of published-on-Wikipedia Rorschach tests ever could be.

Charles has a very dark, dry sense of humor...lighten up, douchebags; he's being funny.

(didn't anyone see Police Beat?)

Please, Charles, explain how we, the reading public, were supposed to infer that this image was of incest?

(Other than you just telling us that's what it is.)

The woman in that picture looks 20 years younger than the Man. To me, this picture illustrates the societal demand for young women in media. Even when the situation calls for a middle aged mother, we still reach for the 20-something girl.

@11: Police Beat was rendered unreadable by the author. Although I will - grudgingly - agree that this post is pretty funny.

Ha, That is a funny post Charles! I get the same vibe or possibly this guy is hoping his wife doesn't catch him doing this with the baby sitter & he assume his son (who is strangely floating in the background) is too young to tell mom. Or, maybe now that his wife's rotting flesh is being pierced by roots, he's thinking - fuck yeah, now I can make out with the baby sitter!

@16, "Police Beat" was a movie, not a book.

Eh. I didn't get the impression that she looked 20 years younger. I actually sort of mentally filled in the rest of her face with Felicity Huffman's face. So, I didn't see anything amiss in this image (except that, on it's face, it's a pretty ugly shot).

In my family this picture is in reverse. I am young and in shape and my wife is older, and, on the rare occasion that we kiss, it is our daughter not our son looming in the background. My wife is not old enough to be my mom - but sometimes people think she is. It is such an uncomfortable feeling ... maybe I've said too much.

As usual Charles, you've overplayed your hand. This post would have been funny if you'd stopped at the first question mark. As it is, all you've done is weird us out.

The guy in this picture doesn't look all to into her, his arms aren't even around her and he is leaning slightly away - from what I see. Maybe he is nervous the relationship is reaching this level of intimacy and he is hoping that kid will break them apart so that his inadequacy will go undedicated for another day or maybe he's in the closet.

I take back what I said, Charles. I will read all your further writings assuming the same intended humor seen here. Your world isn't so dark anymore. And you secretly hate socialism.

I think #5 and #18 have gotten it right. That's the 20-something babysitter Kelsey Grammer is kissing. He plans on marrying her and making her his trophy wife after he dumps wife #1.

Charles, I really enjoy what you write. Sometimes your posts are off-the-wall and weird and fucked up, but they always leave me with the impression that I'm reading a little piece of your brain. ven when it's dispassionate analysis, it feels intimate. I hope the haters don't get to you; keep doing what you do.
