Every Child Deserves a Mother and a Father

Posted by on Tue, Jul 28, 2009 at 8:58 AM

A woman charged with murdering her 3 1/2-week-old son used a knife and two swords to dismember the child and ate parts of his body, including his brain, before stabbing herself in the torso and slicing her own throat, police said Monday. Otty Sanchez, 33, is charged with capital murder in the death of her infant son, Scott Wesley Buchholtz-Sanchez. She was recovering from her wounds at a hospital, and was being held on $1 million bail.

San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said the early Sunday morning attack occurred a week after the child's father moved out.

Okay, I know this is a horrible, horrible story. I know that. I get it. It makes me want to cry that a person could do such a thing.

I'm about to be callous and in very bad taste.

Maybe she misunderstood?

This is not that different from a Partial Birth Abortion.
Give her a medical degree and call her a hero.

More proof of what can happen without the presence of a father. Loveschild, you'll find, is not as off as you think.

Sad, if they had light rail she could just have jumped in front of the train.

There's no indication in this article that a father is in the picture, Dan, so this doesn't really fit.

p.s. GAHHHH!!!!

It's EXTREMELY rare for schizophrenia to result in this kind of violence. My guess is they'll soon find out drugs were involved - this sort of thing often seems to happen in connection to PCP.

The father was in the picture until a week before she ate the baby - when he moved out.
I think the point here is that maybe if the poor baby had been put up for adoption and adopted by a nice, gay couple who'd been screened for mental disease (and not having been pregnant, have no chance of experiencing post-partum depression) the baby would not have been eaten.

Blame it on drugs all you want, blame it on mental illness. Keep telling yourself that it's only a coincidence that the father left only a week earlier.

If the father had not left, this would not have happened. Every child does deserve a mother and a father.

How about changing the title of this series to "Every child deserves sane parents?"

12. Yes, that is why they say every child needs a mother and a father...because we all know that single parents become cannibals. Wow.

@ 12, remember that Texas mother who drowned all her children? The father was there, and even emotionally supportive of his wife.

This psychotic episode might have been triggered by the dad splitting or it might not have; you don't know. But if no one was trying to get her help then the baby was in real danger.

Dan, you're going to have to post this (and the story you did last week about the twins who were kept in their car seats all day) under severe post-partum depression and post-partum psychosis. @9 is correct.

No, he wasn't. She needed mental health care. His "support" amounted to ordering her to have more babies.

And it figures that Texas is charging an obvious lunatic with capital murder.

Sounds a little like post-partum psychosis. Which lesbians are not immune to. Why did you waste my time with this post?

To be fair to the mother, the devil WAS insisting she murder her child.

I have to wonder why no post-partum, child-murdering mothers ever say "logic/science made me do it."

@ 17, after reviewing that authoritative source Wikipedia I have to say we're both part right, part wrong. The husband was a fool to ignore the medical advice, to stick to his Catholic guns regarding children, and treat post-partum depression like it was just a blah kind of mood she was going through. But he loved her and didn't just up and leave her, unlike the dad in this scenario, which was more my point. (And by leave I mean separate or divorce; I'm aware he was leaving her alone and gave her the opportunity to kill the children.)

Anyway, the second trial has already been conducted and she was found not guilty by reason of insanity.

@ 19,

Perhaps this should be re-titled, "There Is No Morality Without Religion" then if the Devil told her to do it.

@ Matt From Denver,

I believe they were part of the 'Quiverfull' movement. You know the one: The Duggers try to outbreed brown people to preserve the white race for Jesus. Nobody in the Yates family was supportive of the Mother: They all insisted, parents/husband/church, that Andrea Yates breed more children even after her doctor told her she needed to stop with the third. They found her a 'Christian' doctor that told her she had to carry on even though she was very depressed, didn't want anymore, and was bordering on looney tunes.

Also related, let's not overlook the fat that she OWNED TWO SWORDS. Methinks the crazy in this one probably pre-dates the delivery.

Ok, this made me laugh. I couldn't really tell you why. Maybe giggling is the sound of the last bit of softness in my soul hardening into a geode of indifference. But, I totally laughed. The only thing that would have made me laugh harder is if she had died too.

To MikeC who claims this happened because there was no father, look at this recent story: http://www.dailycamera.com/news/2009/jul…
2 month old Jack was living with both of his opposite sex parents and things haven't turned out too well for him. Also note in the article's sidebar about other local cases, that four out of the five cases involve children who were living with their father and mother. (The fifth case is of the "evil live-in boyfriend" variety).
All children deserve to be brought up by people who love them and treat them well.
