A Reason to Visit Maine

Posted by on Mon, Jul 27, 2009 at 3:27 PM

1a07/1248727461-61ypsqzgjjl._sl500_aa240_.jpgThe wondrous book blog that is Shaken & Stirred has discovered that Jonathan Lethem has opened a used bookstore in Blue Hill, which is a town on the north end of mid-coastal Maine.

Then we met up with old friend Jonathan Lethem, who's just started a used bookstore called Red Hand (??) right next to Blue Hill Antiques - part of their annex, really, right down on Water Street - which is, as always, the little jag off Main(e) Street that leads down to the harbor . It's an enchanting little shop, with couches and espresso machine and books floor to ceiling. It is, in fact, the bookstore we all dreamed of owning when we were kids. Figures. Well, I'm glad one of us got it. And the rest of us can visit. Jonathan claims he opened in part to redeem the boxes and boxes of old books he's been hoarding for years.

Next time I visit my family in Maine, I'll check it out and report back. Speaking of Lethem, I can't wait to read his new novel, Chronic City, which will be published this fall. It looks like an incredibly ambitious whale of a book.

The best reason I can think of to visit Maine is to work for Stand For Marriage Maine to pass the people's veto referendum repealing Gay Marriage.

a reason to visit maine...the only reason anyone goes there is to fuck ugly sluts, right? and then pretend you went there for the lobster, of course. you wouldn't want your friends to know what you'd been putting your dick in.

My Blue Hill sources say the name is Red Gap. Another owner (in addition to Lethem) is Marjorie Kernan, whose "The Ballad of West 10th Street" they highly recommend.
