Today in Geek

54d1/1248473218-marvelman.pngHere's a brief roundup of the announcements coming out of the "Jewish diaspora" that is San Diego Comic-Con today.

But first, an apology: I can't believe I missed this yesterday in Geek: IDW comics announced that they are starting a Weekly World News comic book.

Ryall had a new project of his own to announce: "The Weekly World News," a new monthly title debuting in January 2010 with art from Alan Robinson. The Ryall-penned series is based on the supermarket tabloid, which caused a substantial chunk of the audience to erupt with laughter. The book features characters like freakish-looking Bat Boy, uber-conservative Ed Anger, an alligator-human hybrid called Mangator and a psychologist ape named PhD Ape. "I couldn't not write this one," he laughed. "Hopefully it'll be as insane as these characters would lead you to believe."

This is toe-curlingly exciting news.

Just about every news source seems disappointed at the lack of movie announcements at SDCC this year. Could Comic-Con's media cache be fading even as it begins? One announcement, which may or may not be true, happened by accident: a fan asked Gary Oldman when the sequel to The Dark Knight would be released. Oldman replied: "We start filming next year." That's the first anyone has confirmed of a Batman movie sequel.

And at what will probably be the last big announcement of the day, Marvel Comics just announced that they own the rights to Marvelman, which is kind of the holy grail of superhero comics. Alan Moore's Marvelman (which in America had to be titled "Miracleman" due to legal trouble caused by Marvel Comics) has been tied up in legal knots for decades. Presumably Marvel will begin republishing the series, but Marvelman will apparently be featured in Marvel Comics as an ongoing character.

I knew I should have eBayed my entire run of Miracleman while it was out of print.

I absolutely shudder to think what a "boring" day in your life must consist of.

Never mind; reading up a bit on the case, it sounds like the runs of Miracleman by Alan Moore and Neil Gaiman may not be getting back into print anytime soon, since the rights still need to be negotiated with the many various artists on the series.
