At a press conference at Seattle Police headquarters a short time ago, police spokesperson Sean Whitcomb said the man in these two videos (one of them released earlier today) should be considered dangerous. "This is a person that we believe to be connected to the case," Whitcomb said. He added that detectives believe the man, who they're officially calling a "person of interest," may frequent South Seattle, Auburn, and Federal Way. He's described as "a black male, 20-30 years old, 5’10, with a medium brown complexion," and he appears clearly at about 1:45 in the new video:
"We want this man found," Whitcomb said.
He was vague about exactly what type of connection detectives believe the man has to the murder of Teresa Butz early Sunday morning, though Whitcomb did say: "This is not a witness." Which narrows down the possibilities somewhat. The numbers to call with information about the man? Here.
The time and date stamps on the videos indicate they were shot in March of 2008, and Whitcomb suggested that's accurate—that the videos were, in fact, shot more than a year ago. That might seem to indicate that this is someone well-known to police, but Whitcomb also said authorities don't know the man's name. They do, however, know exactly where the video was shot and why it was stored for so long. But Whitcomb said he couldn't share that information.
What's the actual color of the pit bull featured in these black-and-white videos? Brown and white.
Is the man in the video the same man who is depicted in the sketch released earlier this week by police? Whitcomb answered with a question of his own: "Is it possible that this person may truly be the person depicted in the sketch? Yes, that is possible."
Do police think that the murder of Butz, and the simultaneous attack on her partner, may have been an anti-gay hate crime? "We believe it was a random attack," Whitcomb said. "If that's the case, then certainly it makes [a hate crime motivation] less likely." But, he quickly added, they're not ruling anything out.
