How They Lie

Posted by on Fri, Jul 24, 2009 at 6:25 PM

The woman in the video below, filmed in a Walmart parking lot yesterday in Port Angeles, supports marriage rights for same-sex couples, she told Chris Mason, 27, who filmed this clip as part of a documentary. So why did she agree to sign Referendum 71, which would repeal the domestic partnership bill?

The man in the video, who's working for the anti-gay Protect Marriage Washington, uses misleading tactics. First, he says the referendum would give the woman an opportunity to decide whether she is “in favor” of giving marriage licenses to homosexual couples—implying that it would expand gay rights. But R-71 would do the opposite by repealing a bill that gives registered gay couples more rights. “She told me she was in favor of same sex marriage licenses,” Mason says about his conversation with the woman after she signed the petition. "I don't think she would have signed it" if she had known, he says.

Even if the woman opposed gay marriage, the petitioner is also lying when he says that the measure applies to giving "homosexual couples legal marriage licenses." R-71 concerns only domestic partnerships, not “marriage.” Then he further embellishes his lie by claiming that the measure is not just about "the same rights as married people, but marriage licenses, too"—which is also the opposite of what domestic partnerships are: the rights of marriage without marriage licenses. Mason says the man, who refused to give his name, gathered many signatures yesterday using this technique.

But the burn is (probably) on the bigots. They have made this a referendum on gay marriage, and they're still probably going to fail to get on ballot.

Signatures are due tomorrow. If R-71 sponsors fail to turn in the required 120,577 signatures, the domestic partnership law will go into effect on Sunday. If they turn in more, the Secretary of State's Office will determine if there are enough valid signatures in the next two weeks. Assuming the petitions fails, David Ammons, spokesman for the Secretary of State's Office, says, "Our department runs the domestic-partnership registry, and they are preparing to update the website to inform [registered partners] of their added rights."

There are a bunch of "preserve marriage" petitioners at the Key Arena right now (some kind of "Women of Faith" event) if anyone wants to test out their honesty or debate skills.

I guess forcing petitioners to print the entire bill on one sheet of paper is more important than keeping them honest, eh?

One here donated to create those petitions, so those "godly" people can have an opportunity to have a say. How does it feel to know that they used your money to print actual lies on the petitions, and to hear one of those "godly" people lie to obtain signatures, Loveschild. Are you proud, you who claim to have nothing but love in your heart for gays because their children of God just like you.

"The less the enemy knows the better. All I know is that it seems quite simple, given the intimidatory tactics that some pro gay marriage groups and individuals (Mr Holden / Mr Savage) have engaged in and the outright brutal attacks, you won't see the handing out of petitions in places where there are known opponents who can distort and slow the gathering. I believe that's the best thing to do, keeping low and out of certain areas where nothing will accomplished, nothing, focusing instead on those where there are people with receptive concerns until all the signatures needed have been gathered. Wait until R-71 is in front of you then you can make use of your citizen right and vote in favor of it or against it. I'm against it, but since I saw how many hurdles where being put in their way I have donated as a private citizen that I am because I'm in favor of our democratic process going forward not dimished and I think that they have the right to put this for referendum and let the people decide.

Baconcat, Instead of finding undemocratic ways to stop these signatures don't you think your time would be better spent in trying to explain to the people why they should not vote in favor once they see it in the voting booth? That and assuring them (if it's true only) that you wont use your domestic partnerships as a stepping stone to gay marriage. Where do you think you will end up Baconcat if you keep demonizing the other side. Lets meet in the middle of the road so that we can put these things behind us and focus on more important issues that affect all of us. "

Apparently, integrity and honesty isn't part of the Protect Marriage Washington creed. To think they are doing this for faith, and therefore God, he must be so proud of all of you right now.

If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them. LEVITICUS 20:13

But dixon, didn't Jesus work out a new deal with God, where we can do whatever the fuck we want so long as we accept God's grace. I signed the back of a Chic comic, so I have gay sex and kill whoever looks at me cross-eyed with the sure and certain knowledge of heaven because I've been bathed in the blood of The Lamb.

I've also bathed in lamb's blood, but that was totally different.

Yes, Dixon that is what Leviticus 20:13 says. AND, we have these little gems from Proverbs.

A false witness will not go unpunished, and he who pours out lies will not go free. PROVERBS 19:5

A false witness will not go unpunished, and he who pours out lies will perish. PROVERBS 19:9

So, whose more worthy of death the person who lieth with mankind or the the one who bears false witness? Or are we to assume that there is a ranking system, and as long as you aren't the one who lieth with mankind your free and clear to bear false witness? I'm personally not aware of a "Free to Bear False Witness Card" in the Bible.

@8: It's in the secret hidden chapter, you probably didn't get that version.

Whosoever shall declareth their bigotry and bear false witness against others shall be absolved of all sin, forever and ever amen LOVESCHILD 6:66

I guess I didn't get that chapter, Baconcat. I'm so glad that I didn't.

Thank you for the smile.

@10: Sodom and Gomorrah were purged because of buttsex, but Lot was spared due to being righteous, then banged his daughters and had kids with them.

Now that I think about it, "Bible Verses or HUMP plot?" would be a good gameshow.

@11: You know those books you hear about, the ones bound in human skin? That's one of them!

@12: Actually, I would love to see a HUMP submission inspired by the story of Lot and his daughters.

@12 Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed because the people were inhospitable to strangers. This sounds more like the radical right than we queers who tend to welcome the least among us.

If anyone at "Seattle's only newspaper" knew anything about voter initiatives, they's know that almost every single initiative uses these same tactics. In reality, initiatives DO give the right to voters to actually make the decision for themselves, so telling a pro-gay-marriage person that signing the petition would give them the opportunity to decide it for themselves is true.

In addition, it is not a lie to say that R-71 would extend marriage licenses to gay couples. The legislative language uses the verbiage "extend marriage equally to domestically registered couples." Does that not effectively extend marriage licenses to gays?

Of course, liberals never want voters to actually decide for themselves. They would rather ram it through their legilatures or courts.

Jesus is the bride as described in Revelation, and he is married to all of us so what is the bug deal about a guy and a guy being married anyway?

Revelation 22:17 The Spirit and the bride say, "Come!".The battle against the sexualities should stop, and start being one in love now so we can be one in love for eternity.
