Anyone who used Google this morning knows from the DC Comic-themed Google logo that the San Diego Comic-Con (a.k.a. Nerd Mecca) officially kicked off today. You may not have noticed that Google also rolled out a ton of comic-book-themed iGoogle frames today. If you're one of the few people on Earth who still use iGoogle for a home page, you can now decorate it with Peanuts, Jaime Hernandez, Hellboy, Jim Woodring, Renee French, the Hulk, and many more.
Besides that, it was a surprisingly light day for announcements, but there were a few. Jeff Smith announced that he would produce four more Bone comics for Scholastic. If you haven't read Bone, I think it's probably one of the greatest (if not the greatest) works of fantasy produced in the last fifty years. So this is exciting. Unless he fucks it up somehow. In which case it would suck.
Dark Horse is producing a Metalocalypse comic book. This is big news for fans of Cartoon Network. The series will kick off after the Metalocalypse/Goon crossover. (Hopefully, after this crossover, The Goon will go back to being funny, because this serious Goon shit isn't working for me.)
Unsurprisingly, there will be a Pride and Prejudice and Zombies comic book.
And, most excitingly, Drawn and Quarterly announced that they will publish Dan Clowes's next comic book, titled Wilson. This is the first Clowes book to not be published by Fantagraphics, and it's also the first work that will be published as a standalone novel not connected with Eightball, which is the comic that Clowes has been creating since he was a wee lad back in the late '80s. (in an unrelated note, Wikipedia says that Clowes might have had open-heart surgery in 2006, which makes me feel very old.)
This has been your daily nerd.
