This Is An Awful Story

Posted by on Wed, Jul 22, 2009 at 10:31 AM

A Chinese man who worked for Foxconn (a manufacturing partner of Apple) committed suicide because he lost a prototypical 4G iPhone.

"We are saddened by the tragic loss of this young employee, and we are awaiting results of the investigations into his death," Apple spokeswoman Kristin Huguet told CNET on Tuesday. "We require our suppliers to treat all workers with dignity and respect."

But there might be more to the story: Daring Fireball says that Shanghaiist translated some documents that claimed the worker committed suicide because the Foxconn security team was torturing the man to find out what happened to the phone and he couldn't bear the interrogation methods, which may have included beatings, any more. Foxconn's security is denying that torture was involved.

That is seriously fucked up. BTW, in China, iPhone's are very sought after, expensive, and hard to come by. Unlocked versions must be re-imported from the US, and they sell for about $800 USD (and that's the 3G version).

Good thing he wasn't working on the ultra-secret 5G project.

They waterboard you if you lose those prototypes.

you morons, he didnt lose the phone, he stole it then sold it to someone who would reverse engineer it or something. too bad he killed himself over it though, not worth dying over a phone, but then again, people think a little different over in China...

Probably still beats working directly with Steve Jobs. Suicide is getting off easy in Cupertino.

Q. What's the difference between Apple Computer and the Church of Scientology?

A. Apple trades on the NASDAQ.
