Overheard in the Office

Posted by on Wed, Jul 22, 2009 at 12:23 PM

City council candidate Jessie Israel to Dan Savage during an endorsement interview in our conference room:

"You can just fuck off then."

Well!

UPDATE: On behalf of Original Monique I put this question to Jessie: "If elected, what will do about the douchebag problem in Ballard?"

"Ha ha ha ha! The douchebag problem in Ballard? Ha ha ha! What will I do about the douchebag problem in Ballard? Is that a real question? Ballard is doing a great job of making sure we're creating a vibrant retail district there while keeping out the big box stores. And if that attracts a certain number of—well, it's great that we're keeping wonderful and locally-owned businesss in Ballard. I tend to be pretty proud of that. And if there are too many urban hipsters, or 'douchebags,' in Ballard as a result then... so be it."

What was the context? It might have been just the right thing to say.

I think he meant "thank you". He has Tourettes syndrome.

This was posted by Dan Savage, yet the author overheard someone talking "to Dan Savage"? I'm confused.

I like it, I would expect -- providing that it was a political statement and not a complaint about the refreshments -- Dan would appreciate it as well

Care to clarify, Dan?

I love Jessie Israel. How you got her to say something like that is impressive. I asked her, "if elected, what will do about the douchebag problem in Ballard?". Needless to say, she was very diplomatic about her response, and she refused to admit that anyone in Ballard was a DB.

Well played, Dan!

Dan Savage: You know, I supported George Bush's invasion of Iraq.

Well, she's certainly told Nick Licata to fuck off by targeting his seat. I like her, but she won't get my vote away from him.

Alright, I hearby challenge Jessie Israel to go to the Ballard Loft on a Saturday night and order a drink. She must hang out there for at least an hour. She must go between the hours of 11pm and 1am.

Gauntlet drawn! Let's see if she can stomach the douchebaggery!

Mittens Schrodinger 19
The Ballard douchebag problem is only overshadowed by the subsequent arrival of choads. Douchebags are a gateway problem leading to massive choad infestation. Ballard is doomed.

@18, I'm with you. I usually associate douchebags with popped collars, frosted hair, and belligerent drunkenness. Do I misunderstand?

i think i like this Jesse Israel, but she really needs to understand the difference between a hipster and a douchebag if she expects to make a difference in seattle. if she can master this task, she'll have earned my vote.

uh, does the Stranger really need to be playing the hipster/douchebag card?

There is plenty of hipster-douchebag overlap. Hipsters like to think d-bags are just frat guys and entitled suburbanites, but it's more about attitude. Every neighborhood in town is overrun with them, fwiw.

Hernandez 26
OK, I'm going to give Ms. Israel the benefit of the doubt on this:

While not every urban hipster is a douchebag, it is entirely possible for an urban hipster to act in a manner that is similarly off-putting to the manner of the common, popped-collar douchebag.

Where there are artisan cheeses and pugs, there are douche-bags. This is a fact of life. You learn to deal with it or you move to a small town and became their douchebags who raise the price of real estate.

Yes, 28, that was the only question we asked. And the Stranger didn't play the hipster/douche card, 23, Original Monique played it. We just relayed it.

To clarify, I was refering to the DB that come up from Belltown and infest Ballard during the weekends, normally from the hours of 10pm to midnight. After that, most of them are headed back from whence they came.

And they are the popped collar, frat boy, ed hardy wearing jerks.

I suggest shutting down the Ballard Bridge at night, and making people go through Fremont. This way, the DB's will just stop at Ballroom in Fremont (if they leave Belltown at all), never going all the way to Ballard. Hipster DB's are pretty avoidable and don't stink of Axe. Therefore, not as big as a problem.

@31 - no, you in Ballard can keep em. We brought in soccer and wine bars to convince them not to stop in Fremont and keep going to Ballard, they're your problem now.

now ballard is the new manhattan? stop those bridge & tunnelers? get real. it was only 10 years ago ballardites still drove with their seatbelts hanging out and their turn signals permanently on. i think the guys wearing axe are the native ballarites and the snobs are the douchebags. where'd you move here from OM?
Posted by takes one to know one on July 22, 2009 at 3:32 PM
Original Monique 36
@35: Seattle for life bitch. And I have friends are are native Ballardites, and I love the natives. I am mainly sticking up for them due to the frat boy/gold digger infestation. I live in North Capitol Hill, so my exposure to DB's is pretty limited. I am working toward the greater good.

But hey, keep on, hatin on. My guess is you live in Bellevue.

@45 It's not that entertaining.

I've been to Ballard and Fremont and Capitol Hill. None of those places are as cool as they think they are, and none are as cool as about a half-dozen neighborhoods in Portland, Oregon.
Posted by Grease Wizard on July 22, 2009 at 11:19 PM

@46: You know I was just in Portland last week. Its cute and all but you can only handle so many urban boutiques (I will endlessly wonder how a city with relatively few major industries can support so many greeting card makers).

Also, Portland needs to learn that just because a street has retail doesn't mean its a neighborhood.
