One Fucking Minute: Congressman McDermott

Posted by on Wed, Jul 22, 2009 at 8:40 AM

Sixty seconds with Seattle's guy in the House of Representatives.

In the interview, Jim McDermott says of Dave Reichert and other Republicans who have been voting against health care reform: "There's no sense in trying to convince these people." Then he goes on (way past the one-minute buzzer, but I kept asking questions so really it's my fault) to talk about the need for a strong public option, the obstacles to change, and why the present model for health care reform actually makes a single payer health care system—his ultimate goal—a harder sell. Total fucking minutes, for those listening past the buzzer: four.

Previously: Jon Mejia, Lee Colleton, Jay Inslee.

"There's no sense in trying to convince these people." That seems to be a running sentiment on Slog (see Dan's rant up above). Is it true? Is there no use in trying to reason with your opponent, who you view as tragically ignorant and beneath contempt? Is the only way to achieve change just to overwhelm your opposite number and militantly force policy on them?
