More Like Punk'd: Wednesday Morning Art Hoax

Posted by on Wed, Jul 22, 2009 at 12:11 PM

This morning I got a press release (claiming to be) from Bravo. It announced that the first rounds of auditions for Sarah Jessica Parker's as-yet-untitled contemporary art version of "Project Runway" have been so well received that the producers have expanded the number of cities they're visiting—and that they're coming to try out Seattle artists.

The Seattle casting call, according to the press release, was to be set for August 18, from 10 am to 2 pm at Foster/White Gallery.

Also listed were casting calls in several other cities:

Casting Calls for The Untitled Art Project are as follows:

SAN FRANCISCO

Saturday, August 15, 10AM - 4PM

Haines Gallery

www.hainesgallery.com

SEATTLE

Tuesday, August 18, 10AM - 2PM

Foster White Gallery

www.fosterwhite.com

DALLAS

Saturday, August 22, 10AM - 2PM

Angstrom Gallery

BOSTON

Wednesday, August 26, 10AM - 2PM

Miller Block Gallery

I called Foster/White to ask, How'd you get the gig?

Here's what Kim, who answered the phone, said.

We would like to ask the same thing, because we were not notified! Nobody has any idea what this is about.

I called the other galleries listed with us on the press release, and they hadn't heard about it either. So I called Bravo, I talked to the assistant of the woman who writes the press releases, and I said, Could you get back to us?

Hilariously enough, the gallery listed in Dallas is closed.

Hopefully, Bravo gets back to us, and if it's real, I'll let you know. We're kind of guessing at this point that it's sort of a nationwide hoax.

Ten minutes later, I got another call from Kim.

So Bravo just called me, and the woman said she did not write that press release!

So far, it sounds like we've been hoaxed.

But whodunit? I replied to the email address from whence the release came, and am waiting to hear...

UPDATE: The plot thickens. Don't blame it on Susan Jensen, the person who forwarded the press release. Here's her response to my question whether the release is a hoax.

I received this from a very reliable source and sent it to my lists. I forwarded your email to my source.

Is the artist trio PDL behind this somehow?

UPDATE: Turns out Susan Jensen got the release from Heather Dwyer at 4Culture, who picked it up from an Americans for the Arts listserv. Author still unknown, and what would be the point?

Hoaxing aside, I can't wait for the utter travesty that is going to be this wonderful train wreck of a show. If you haven't already read it, enjoy this beautiful mess: http://www.artinfo.com/news/story/31909/…

Oh, I was hoping the actual existence of that show was part of the hoax.

I'd prefer to see Artstar... I think there was a season two... it's nowhere to be seen though...

Glad to hear you are investigating something so important. Well done, keep us informed minute by minute on this one. On a side note, i just pooped in the upstairs bathroom at my office, also I scratched my left nostril and took a sip of coffee around 2:46pm. I'll let you know if i blow my nose later on.
