Jonah's still on vacation—I hear he's cashed out his trust fund and is now somewhere in France, taking an immersive Marxism course—which means that I'm going to have to process the news from the year's biggest nerd-fest, San Diego Comic-Con, all by myself.
Here's the first weird comic-y news: Super-Size Me star Morgan Spurlock will be publishing a comic through Dark Horse Comics that will “feature bizarre stories about the U.S.’s obsession with fast food.” It will be an anthology, and it will feature a Crypt-Keeper sort of character called "MC Super-Size Me." I think that perhaps, coming so quickly on the heels of Where in the World is Osama Bin Laden, this will be the end of Morgan Spurlock's brief, shining moment of fame.
But speaking of comics and food, I went to Zanadu Comics last week and bought the first two issues of Chew and I really liked them. Here's the publisher's description of the comic:
Tony Chu is a cop with a secret. A weird secret. Tony Chu is Cibopathic, which means he gets psychic impressions from whatever he eats. It also means he's a hell of a detective, as long as he doesn't mind nibbling on the corpse of a murder victim to figure out whodunit, and why. It`s a dirty job, and Tony has to eat terrible things in the name of justice. And if that wasn`t bad enough, the government has figured out Tony Chu`s secret. They have plans for him… whether he likes it or not.
If you enjoy science fiction (besides the main character's sole power, the story takes place on a world where chicken is banned and the F.D.A. seems to have more power than the F.B.I.), mystery comics, or weird-but-still-solidly plotted comics, you should take a look the next time you're at a comics shop. (Unfortunately, though I like the loose interior art style, the covers are really ugly. I hope that series artist Rob Guillory will eventually give up the cover artist duties—some comics artists just aren't that good at coming up with striking cover visuals. There's no shame in admitting that.) I expect it's only going to be a few months before Chew gets optioned to become a TV show or movie, and you'll want to be on that bandwagon before it leaves the, um, bandwagon-station.
(Because Chew's covers are so ugly, and because Morgan Spurlock's comic doesn't have any art yet, this post is illustrated with the panel that introduced my favorite super-hero, Matter-Eater Lad, to the world. He can eat anything!)
