I loved, loved, LOVED Coraline:
The animated film version of Coraline does the unthinkable: It surpasses the book in almost every way.
Annie Wagner wasn't offended by The Great Buck Howard:
The film is as inoffensive and even-keeled as its protagonist, and the only thing you’re likely to remember a week later is the single character indulgence Malkovich allows himself: a wild handshake that rolls like an earthquake and lasts so long you’d think aftershocks were involved.
(And I pretty much agreed with her.)
I wasn't crazy about Watchmen:
Watchmen leans more toward recent movies like Sin City and Zack Snyder's own 300 in its slavish devotion to the source material; if you were to freeze-frame the movie at certain points, you'd have a giant reproduction of panels from the comic. On one level, it's incredibly satisfying that the director takes comics that seriously. But on the other hand, Snyder seems to miss the point of what makes Watchmen such an amazing comic book.
There are a couple of interesting direct-to-videoish movies out today. One is Google Me, a documentary in which a guy named Jim Kileen goes out to meet every guy named Jim Kileen he can find on Google. The other is Visioneers, a mockumentary about working for a corporation starring Zach Galifianakis.
You can also rent Godard's Made in U.S.A. and 2 or 3 Things I Know About Her; Super Capers, a superhero satire movie; the snuff film thriller Skeleton Crew; Corin Nemec starring as Ted Bundy; and American Outrage, a documentary about two Native American sisters trying to keep the government from repossessing their horses.
TV shows include the first season of G.I. Joe; Charlie's Angels: Season 4; Prison Break: The Final Break; Pushing Daisies: Season 2; 5 seasons of America's Test Kitchen; and Psych: Season 3.
There's a full list of movies available today over here.
