Meanwhile in California

Posted by on Tue, Jul 21, 2009 at 12:15 PM

With everything on the chopping block—schools, parks, roads, cops, firemen, human services—one might think that California had better things to spend its money on than harassing nude sunbathers.

California parks officials can enforce a ban on nudity at any state beach, even in areas that have been informally designated as "clothing optional," a state appeals court says. The new policy will take effect immediately, although officers will decide whether to warn, cite or arrest violators, said Roy Stearns, spokesman for the state Parks and Recreation Department.

"I'm pretty sure that we will try to tread lightly to get compliance at first," he said Monday, three days after the appellate court in Santa Ana published its ruling as a statewide precedent. "We're not in the business of hassling people. Officer discretion will play a role."

"We're not in the business of hassling people"

Except that's EXACTLY what they're doing.

They had that order in last week. We still do it anyway. The cops have also tried to crack down on the annual Amtrack Mooning in Laguna Beach too. Buch of prigs.

Sounds like another example of "revenue enhancement"; after all, nude sunbathers should be pretty easy pickings for cops out to make a few extra $$ for their municipalities.

This is just like the cop who hands out jaywalking tickets at 3rd and Pine in the mornings: it's an easy source of revenue.

Budget crises equate to heavier enforcement of petty crimes and not just traffic infractions. It is a means of exorting tax revenue. Crackheads in the panhandle have no cash for tickets. This is the same reason the Seattle Police bust jaywalkers on 3rd street while letting street trash harass everybody.

On another note, I remember going to North Baker Beach as a horny teenager only to discover that it was nothing but a few old crusty guys sucking each other off and the only woman on the beach was a hooker reading a book doggy style.

Isn't "officer discretion" code for "If it's nude chicks, cool, but if it's nude gay dudes, fine them"?

Well, when the cops can't waste your tax dollars on arresting MJ smokers, what did you think they would do?

Track down murderers?

Nah, that's hard work.

@ 5: Reg, what does "reading a book doggy style" mean? Best wishes.

@11:

I think it means she was turning the pages with her fist closed into a paw-shape...

Judging by those great documentarians William Higgins and Joe Gage, most cops/rangers in Cali will happily strip down and "join" the nude miscreants...

Now we need for thousands to protest by being naked on the beach!

So Dan resisted any temptation to make a "fat and naked" joke here. Good boy.

@11, she was reading a book while on all fours in the doggy style position presenting the goods. Then her pimp or friend or whatever came over and asked if my friend and I wanted to join her behind the rocks because she does "private parties."

NOOOOOO!!! Those fuckers. Blacks Beach is the best beach in San Diego. It's so nice to just relax on the beach naked. The sun, the breeze, the water. I can't explain it, but it's so much better without clothing in the way.
