South Park Speculation

Posted by on Mon, Jul 20, 2009 at 12:33 PM

It's come up in the comments in connection with the gruesome South Park stabbing over the weekend:

Do the police think this was an anti-gay motivated crime?

The question arises because of the way reports have described the incident, in which two women were stabbed (one fatally) by an unknown man at around 3 a.m. on Sunday:

A man entered their house as they slept, possibly through an open or unlocked window in the back, and attacked them.

Seattle Police have described the man as someone "who clearly has evil intent... very predatory in nature." A few minutes ago I asked police spokesman Mark Jamieson whether the women were a couple, and if so whether this is being investigated as a possible hate crime. His response:

I don’t know if the victims a) resided together and b) if they were a couple. We are looking at everything in connection with this investigation. All the information we have, we’ve put out.

An emergency community meeting to discuss the incident will be held tonight at 7 p.m. at the South Park Community Center, 8319 8th Avenue South.

Will the community meeting be interpreted, as it happens, in Spanish. Are the leaflets being handed out also printed in Spanish?

This is a heavily Hispanic community and bi-lingual engagement and outreach is essential.

Well, if we are going to speculate, I'm going to suggest stalker/jilted lover.

It could have also been a robbery gone wrong, where the attacker roused the victims and decided he had to kill them. That they happened to be a couple doesn't exactly make it a hate crime, unless we see more details that indicate this. That he "clearly has evil intent... very predatory in nature" could just mean he was armed and ready to kill if caught.

This just seems dishonest. The surviving victim has already been released from the hospital according to KOMO. The police haven't asked her who lived in the home yet? Its been over 24 hours, they haven't spoken to the landlord yet? Seriously? A predatory killer has been on the loose for a day and a half and the police still don't even know this basic information?

Why would anyone live in a craphole like South Park.

Have you seen the rents in San Franscisco?

They're dropping like flies.

I saw a one bedroom apartment for sale for $125,000.

Why would anyone want to live in Seattle especially a crappy neighborhood like South Park?

That is so scary. I don't want to live in a paranoid state, but I'm just saying I feel pretty good about having a security system in my house right about now.

On the KIRO news report last night, a neighbor was interviewed on camera and described the women as very nice neighbors and "a cute couple".

"why would anyone want to live in a crappy neighborhood like south park?" Well, I guess as a resident of south park, I take offense to sucha comment. Sorry if I cannot afford to live in an upstanding, yuppie neighborhood like yours, Rieece. You ignorant fucktard.

The women were a couple, the woman who died had owned the house for several years. They were planning their commitment ceremony for September 12th.
I know / knew them both well, and there is no reason to decry South Park as a shithole or anything of the sort. They were part of a wonderful, accepting, committed community that is really showing its true colors in the wake of such a terrible tragedy.
You clearly are not reporting all the facts, I hope you take the time to talk to the community before writing any more on this subject. There are passionate discussions about how to prevent SENSELESS crimes like this one happening all over the internet between people who knew and loved these two terrific people.

Does it have to be an anti-gay hate crime to matter?

I guess it is time for me to finally register...

Well, #5, 4 years or so ago South Park looked like it would be a good place to invest in a starter home at. We could afford it, the neighborhood was definitely diverse, and I'll be honest, we were hoping/still hope that it gets a little bit of that Georgetown vibe. It was a good place to make what will be the biggest $$$ investment that my wife and I will probably make together.

THAT'S why. Did I mention the awesome neighbors, the great food, and the quick access to 99?

I love South Park. It's my home away from home. I enjoy many of the bars, restaurants and I love the new library out there. Some of my best friends live there with the puppy we adopted together. I met those women, they attended some parties and a wedding of the friends I mentioned. My friends live right next door. I saw them hours before it happened. We waved at each other that night from our cars as I was leaving the house and they were arriving home. They were going to get married in September. I can't stop thinking about that. I will be at tonight's meeting.

Love You South Park!

thanks to those who posted positive comments about South Park. I have lived here for 5 years and love it here. The neighborhood we live in has no bearing on this crime and the cretin who did this to this couple. This has shattered our world here. Let us not focus on the type of place we live, and instead come together and make our community stronger.

I am also a resident of South Park and we got our house in 06 for many of the same reasons everybody else moves to South Park. We are very upset about what happen over the weekend. Keeping perspectives in context: two women were brutally attacked by a killer whose intentions were to kill. My thoughts and heart go out to the victim and the survivor who is struggling to stay alive. As I am writing my brain is processing this disgusting murder and making me much more angry and upset. A man killing a women with a knife is horrendous and a cowardly act. The community needs sketches of this killer immediately. Why is this story not on the front page of the FU**ING Seattle Times?
