Re: This Weekend at the Movies

Posted by Lindy West on Fri, Jul 17, 2009 at 12:54 PM

Commenter keshmeshi reminds me that Three Dollar Bill Cinema is showing the losing-your-virginity-in-contest-form-at-summer-camp classic Little Darlings outdoors at Cal Anderson Park tonight. Sounds like a lovely time!

To whet your appetite, here's the intro to the Kristy McNichol E! True Hollywood Story:

"McNichol's off-screen life was, in fact, a human thrill ride."

I loved that movie! I remember seeing it at the old Lake City Theater.... Armand Asante... I think I need a cold shower....

Little Darlings is the greatest hymen-based thriller ever made. They don't make 'em like that anymore (and when they try, it looks like Thirteen).

This movie is not yet out on DVD. At least not legally out.

Schmader, thanks for coining the name for that genre. I can't think of another coming-of-age movie that got the "losing it for girls" party right. (Come to think of it, I can't name many coming-of-age-and-losing-it-for-girls movies.) Little Darlings has everything -mean girls, shirtless Asante, brooding Matt Dillon and a tiny hippie-ish Cynthia Nixon (Sex and the City's Miranda) as a tiny hippie.

Kristy McNichol was butt-honkin'-ugly. The real hottie of that generation was Valerie Bertinelli. Until she married Eddie Van Halen, of course.

That was Cynthia Nixon?! That's crazy! I had a huge crush on her.

And Thirteen was horrible, awful, stupid. Like the biggest threat faced by a 13-year-old girl staggering down Hollywood Boulevard with a bottle of booze and an older guy and is her best friend and her mom. Riiiight. Brazen girls traumatizing innocent boys with blowjobs! Uh-huh. The main message of that movie was "Women are hysterical fuck-ups and men are useless puds". What a load of crap.

Uh-oh, I'm ranting. Time to get out of here!

@6: And now that she's divorced him, Bertinelli looks 10 kinds of hot all over again. How old is she and what secret fountain is she drinking from???

No doubt. I have the hots for her all over again. And also, forgive me for misspelling Mackenzie Phillips's name. And also forgive me for being so kind. Butt-honking-ugly is far too kind in describing Mackenzie Phillips's looks.

Mackenzie Phillips is going to be on the next season of Celebrity Rehab. With Dennis Rodman, Heidi Fleiss, and Tom Sizemore. And the bass player from Alice In Chains.

Hymen-based thriller - hilarious! These trashy True Hollywood Stories are a guilty pleasure of mine. No doubt I'll be checking out the "human thrill ride" that was Kristy McNichol's life. If only to find out what really went on during the turbulent Empty Nest years and how exactly she tried to "fill the void."

They would never, ever make a movie about teens hijacking a school bus to pull over a condom heist today.

I love that movie.

It's too bad that Mackenzie Phillips is using again. My brother met her in the 90s through AA; she was raising her son, clean, and he found her very sweet and inspiring. Sad.
