Seems like this Friday's prayers at Tehran University will either make or break the Mousavi opposition. From the New York Times:
Opposition supporters vowed on Web sites and social networking sites to show up at the prayers in force. There were reports that green prayer mats — the color green symbolizing both Islam and the opposition — were sold out across the city. The opposition has not held a street protest since last Thursday, when thousands poured into central Tehran before being dispersed by security forces firing tear gas and wielding wooden truncheons. In the days after the June 12 vote, hundreds of thousands of protesters took to the streets, but their numbers have dwindled in the face of a heavy government crackdown.
Meanwhile, Ahmadinejad postures from afar:
Mr. Ahmadinejad, who is on a regional visit to the northeastern city of Mashhad, will not attend the prayers. On Thursday, he addressed a large crowd of supporters there and blamed Iran’s external enemies for the turmoil over the elections.“In this recent election the enemy tried to bring the battlefront to the interior of this country,” Mr. Ahmadinejad told a big crowd, according to Reuters, citing a Press TV translation. He said that he had “told the enemies” that Iran would “strike you in the face so hard you will lose your way home.”
Tough words for a guy who hid in Russia during the initial election turmoil and now is going to hide in the northeast.
Here's hoping—against hope—for the best in Tehran tomorrow.
