The Morning News

Posted by on Wed, Jul 15, 2009 at 8:31 AM

Now, to balance out all the Slayer in yesterday's news, this morning's installment is brought to you by Queen. Not as evil, just as rad (if not radder):

All Dead, All Dead: 168 feared dead in Iranian plan crash.

Doing All Right: Sotomayor's second day of questioning has begun.

You Don't Fool Me: Obama threatens to veto his own defense bill if money for F-22s stays in.

Seaside Rendezvous: A shark washed up on a beach in Long Island to die.

Leaving Home Ain't Easy: The space shuttle Endeavour will try to launch for the sixth time today. Weather and two gas leaks have delayed the launches.

Stone Cold Crazy: Palin is willing to campaign with Democrats, but no Democrats want to campaign with her.

The Miracle: New Zealand is unscathed after a 7.8 earthquake generated a small tsunami.

Too Much Love Will Kill You: SC governor cancels meetings and takes his wife on vacation—leaves four sons, and Argentinean mistress, behind.

Mother Love: World's oldest mom—a Spanish woman who gave birth to twins at the age of 66—has died at the age of 69.

Action This Day: The Senate health committee approved legislation expanding insurance coverage to nearly all Americans.

Breakthru: A pot-bellied dinosaur skeleton has been discovered in Utah.

Every structure in New Zealand--the roads, the big buildings and small buildings alike, the infrastructure--has been built with earthquakes in mind. One of the coolest things in Wellington is underneath Te Papa, the national museum: you can get underneath it and look at its base isolation structure; essentially the entire museum sits on colossal shock absorbers. It's a miracle, but it's also a miracle of excellent planning and engineering.

"Basking" shark? "Beach"? Seems pretty clear to me--it just wanted some sun, sand, an' hot beach babes.

Sad news: Jeff Goldblum happened to be filming a movie in NZ; the force of the quake knocked him off the balcony of his hotel and he fell to his death.

I'm so glad he's gonna stop funding for the F-22.

Remember when it was first introduced? The same year as Gingrich's Welfare Reform, ya know, to balance the budget.

What's the over/under odds of Sen. Al Franken asking a foolish question to Judge Sotomayor, therby proving he is grossly underqualified to serve on the Judiciary Committee?

@8, a merely foolish question would be an improvement over the existing standard, which ranges from "batshit insane" to "tell us how you love America".

Don't Stop Me Now is one of Queen's most underrated songs.
