Health Why Is Health Care Reform in Jeopardy?

The Washington Post provided a nice overview yesterday, on the occasion of President Obama's return from Ghana and the G8:
Headlines during his absence pointed to multiple problems—beyond the virtual wall of opposition among Republicans. There is resistance among conservative Blue Dog Democrats over the potential cost. There is nervousness among progressives that the White House might compromise too much on a public insurance option. The all-important Senate Finance Committee appears stymied. As a result, the prospects of floor action in the House and Senate before the August recess now appear in jeopardy.
Who's representing Washington State on the all-important Senate Finance Committee? Maria Cantwell. Which way is she pushing her colleagues? Unclear at best.

For some reason, when I type the word "dumb" into Microsoft Word's thesaurus, this is what appears:
dumb cane n
a poisonous tropical American plant that if chewed can lead to loss of speech in adults or death in children and small animals. Latin name: Dieffenbachia seguine
This is a plant that makes you go dumb! And that looks like a cross between bamboo, hosta, and basil!

Visual Art 911 Media Arts Center Moving/Clouding

"It's becoming more cloud-like," Joe Gray said of the venerable resource center 911 Media Arts. He was speaking in a discussion with about 25 people about incubating arts and technology in Seattle, at the Frayed Wire conference in Youngstown Cultural Arts Center. (More on Frayed Wire, which was pretty great, later.)
Tina Aufiero, former manager of education programs at 911, confirmed yesterday that 911 will be moving at the end of August into part of the University District space occupied by the nonprofit Jack Straw Productions, while its classes will be held in satellite locations.
In other words, 911 will no longer have its own dedicated space. Will that weaken it, as has happened at CoCA? How could it not? What will happen to groups that met at 911, like the Seattle chapter of dorkbot? Shelly Farnham of dorkbot-sea says the loose collective is considering renting on its own.
More as I learn it.

Carnivores unite! It's the second-annual world's greatest feast in a field, featuring a dozen of Seattle's best chefs cooking whole beasts over hot coals, all day long. The setting (and the beneficiary of this fundraiser): the ridiculously beautiful, endlessly bucolic Smoke Farm (a nonprofit haven for artists, philosophers, and other oddballs an hour north of the city). Among the chefs: organizer Tamara Murphy (Brasa, Elliott Bay Cafe), Matt Dillon (Sitka and Spruce, the Corson Building), Dustin Ronspies (Art of the Table), and Jonathan Sundstrom (Lark). New this year: venison. Continuing from 2008: a river to swim in. (Smoke Farm, Arlington, www.smokefarm.org. 6 pm–midnight, $75, all ages.)

Lucia Perillo's latest collection is the awesomely titled Inseminating the Elephant. You can read two of her poems here if you're thinking about going. I especially like "Early Cascade," which is the only poem I've ever read that includes the sound effect "Pah".

It's moments like this that make me embarrassed to be a citizen of this city: 
You folks have to get used to the noise of the trains. The noise has a rattling rhythm that can actually put you to sleep. That rattling and clanking, the grinding and grating (the dub beat of metal against metal), is not going to go away. This is the city; this is not the country. Please come to that most important of all urban understandings. We have to uproot these country attitudes that thrive like weeds in our metropolis.
