Two Hot Young Novelists On the Way Up

Posted by Paul Constant on Thu, Jul 9, 2009 at 11:24 AM

Strand Magazine will serialize an early, unpublished novel by Graham Greene. And Playboy will publish an excerpt from Vladimir Nabokov's last novel, The Original of Laura, one week before its publication. Nabokov, you will remember, didn't want the novel to be published, but it turns out that his son must love money a whole lot.

Ugh. I wish he'd burned it. How can Nabokov be extrapolated from 50 notecards? Out of respect, I won't read it. I wish Dmitri had had the same respect.

Even the half-hashed-out idea of Nabokov is better than no more Nabokov at all. Consider it a form of experimental fiction. Even if it's not what he would have written, it -- gasp! -- might even be good reading.
