Sen. Carl Levin (D. Mich.) (202) 224-622, chairman of the Armed Services Committee, seems to need encouragement to call for a vote on the repeal of DADT. I spoke to one of his aides on the phone this morning who thanked me for my input.

No Seattleite has the right to use the term 'Redneck'- it reveals your racism...

It's not racist to call someone a redneck - nobody was born a redneck. But you have my sympathy for being born stupid, @3.

it's OBAMA"S fault the money is going to roads-- anyone knows most roads are out in the sticks, and the rural legislators in each state sit on the transportation committees, and they would channel the money he doled out.

The urban legislators like most of ours from Seattle are just too cool and too cowed to sit on a transprotation committe, because then they'd have to say, wow, this whole deal is a scam, because all these dollars go to roads not transit, and they're too chicken to do that.

Obama could have used this money for Change -- directing it to the working poor in the form of bus fare vouchers or vouchers to pay for bus driver hours, avoiding service cuts....or actual investment in rapid transit.

N.B. to Seattleites: the 85% of the State not living in Seattle, despite being rednecks who fuck their daughters and play the banjo, can actually read? So maybe tone down on calling them rednecks, I think it's called "diplomacy" or being "politique"...I'm sure there's some French word for it that you will understand and embrace in your superior mode of existence, ok?

My first reaction is to suggest you shove your sympathy up your ass but I read your stuff on slog and I think I'll just let it pass.

@5: If there were rednecks in WA, the beer would be better. Rednecks would take over the WA LCB and turn it to a force for good.

RE: 200 dogs saved in dogfighting ring.

Why is dogfighting so obviously immoral to nearly everyone, but force feeding birds to death or immobilizing pigs in sow gestation crates for their entire lives isn't?

Is it because they're dogs? If they were caught cockfighting or bullfighting (both also illegal) would it be okay?

Is it because the bodies were disposed of? If these dogs were fought to tenderize their meat for sale would it be okay?

Or is it the obvious reason, tradition? Do people just accept factory farms torturing mammals and birds to death because it's common and traditional (like defining marriage as between one woman and one man)?

I don't ever hear people wanting to repeal existing animal cruelty laws, like dogfighting, cockfighting, bullfighting, pulling the skin off live sheep for their wool, beating conscious cows to death, kicking pets, etc. Why is there such resistance to any new laws - against foie gras, veal crates, egg crates, sow crates, etc? It seems to me like social conservatism run amok without any rhyme or reason. Social conservatives think what we're doing RIGHT NOW is perfect, even if it makes no logical sense whatsoever.

Lizzie, I think the answer to that is that the death of a fighting dog is violent and actively abusive. People don't see overfeeding a bird in the same way.

And then there is the fact that, yes, how we see different types of animals is somewhat subjective? Why do we care about dolphins more than tuna? Because we do.

@10,
Because the poultry and meat industries pay millions to lobby to make sure the public knows as little as possible about what happens at factory farms and slaughterhouses. Dog fighters don't have anything like that.

Dogs are pets. Cattle, chickens, pigs, and ducks are food. That how it is. Sorry.

@9, the phrase "black redneck", in quotes, gets 18,500 hits on Google. Most of them link to something about Thomas Sowell's book entitled "Black Rednecks and White Liberals". So: yes.
