Woman Slashed During Robbery On Capitol Hill

Posted by Jonah Spangenthal-Lee on Wed, Jul 8, 2009 at 9:24 AM

Seattle police called in a helicopter and a K9 unit on Capitol Hill to search for a robbery suspect near Volunteer Park earlier this morning after a man attacked woman and stole her purse.

According to police, at 2:18 this morning, a woman flagged down an officer 10th Ave E and E Highland Drive. The woman was screaming and pointing at a man running east on E. Highland Dr.

Police say the man approached the woman and demanded her purse. Police say the man then pulled a knife and cut the woman's purse straps. After a brief struggle, the woman fell to the ground and the man slashed her wrist and fled when he saw a police car.

The officer chased the man on foot and police called in the King County Sheriff's Guardian One helicopter and a K9 unit to help in the pursuit, but were unable to find the man. Police located the woman's purse and returned it to her.

Police say the woman sustained a minor cut to her right wrist and some bruising. She was treated by medics and transported to the hospital as a precaution.

Great place for luxury condos and light rail.

Pay a premium for the thrill of criminal assault.

Jonah,

Why did you leave out this last sentence from the Police Blotter report?

"The suspect is described as a black male, 6′ tall, short hair, wearing a white T-shirt and dark pants. "

Not to belittle the crime or the victim here, but ... how much does that helicopter cost to operate for a search like this? Maybe that money is better spent on, say, gang prevention detectives?

I wondered what that helicoptor was doing. Ugh.

Walking alone at 2 a.m. by the park (or anywhere) is dangerous.

That's what woke me up at this morning. I could hear the copter(s) by Volunteer Park. It was loud.

Now that she has to pay to treat her injuries, be scared when she walks through the park, and trust people less, Mudede should be pleased because he hates middle class values like trust, honor, and the right to be left alone.

I sure am glad that this women sticks to her principles and was not carrying a gun. The attacker could have been hurt too also if she had been armed! Violence is never the answer.

@11 God forbid the mugger could have been hurt while slashing the woman with his knife! We definitely wouldn't want that, as he is surely a victim of his upbringing and deserves to take whatever he wants from whomever he sees.

@11: Where do you suppose she might have stored that gun if she was carrying it? In her purse, maybe?

@11 it is far stupider for people who don't know how to use guns to carry them and the majority of people don't know how to use them (including many who already own them).

And let's take a lesson from this y'all yuppy hipsters that thought it would be cool to move to Seattle and live the city life ... YOU DON'T LIVE IN THE FUCKING SUBURBS ANYMORE. You live in the city. It has always been dangerous at times (like 2am when you are by yourself), and will likely always be more dangerous at 2am when you are by yourself walking down the street. Does that mean that you deserve what you get? NO! Does it mean that you have to cater to the CITY and protect yourself if you want to fucking live here? YES.

Some of us like the seedy, dirty, quality of our fair city and are sick of the fucking yuppy ass turds that want to live their precious idealized city life without having to endure the dangers.

@13-wow, you just totally won.
Could you imagine if every woman carried a gun in her purse? If they did, I think they'd get mugged about 10x more often. I for one would be after the $300+ firearm. Forget the $20, tampons, and eyeliner. Just get the drop on them, maybe knock them out first. Then you have an expensive weapon with a street value twice that of it's retail value.

And this nonsense about 'liberal' values being at play here? Mugging is by definition a Republican action. (every man for himself, you've got what I want so I'll take it, the stronger survives)

I should clarify my comment @ 14, of course it would be lovely if there was no need to fear, but as the yuppies come in and take over the city changes and it is no longer the skeezey wonderful cool old place to hang out, where you really have to have balls and gusto to be there. So ... take away the scum and the city is not the same. You have ruined that which you wanted to emulate and be a part of. Congratulations yuppy arssholes. Go back to the suburbs.

I agree with #14. Despite the noise of the helicopters at around 3 am this morning (I just remember now looking outside my window and seeing a guy with a dog - it must have been the K9), I love where I live and appreciate the urban madness. Cities vibrate, clank, clatter, spew and explode - I love it.

Who was that uptight NIMBY a few weeks back who bitched about the cruise ship playing Jimmy Buffet music while coming into port? How about that idiot against the fireworks at Gasworks? And those assholes JUST NOW pissed off about noisy light rail? JFC, people. I know not to take a walk in my neighborhood late at night and be victim #4 in a rash of episodes by my place (although one did occur in broad daylight).

For the record, I was once assaulted while leaving Linda's and rushing to catch a downtown to U Diststict bus back in 2001. Lessons learned.

5. As someone who grew up in a high crime city, the copter's necessary to track criminals running off on foot through dense neighborhoods that cop cars can't efficiently search through. A copter guy can spot the criminal from above and alert authorities where to close in on him.

As for this... looks like thugs have migrated onto the Hill. This is already the 2nd robbery near Volunteer Park. I bet the two are linked and the park's being used as a hiding or access point. Of course, SPD won't do shit because they're too busy raiding strip clubs, buying coffee and beating up black people for no reason.

@20: The copter is not someone who grew up in a high crime city.
