That Big Bungalow in the Sky

Posted by on Wed, Jul 8, 2009 at 12:30 PM

Remember Edith Macefield's house?

1d8e/1247080773-macefield_house.jpg

Macefield bequeathed her property to the construction manager who built the thing around her house, Barry Martin. He sold it to a company called Reach Returns, which plans to keep it "identical"—only not. From a company statement:

Reach Returns plans to remodel the home, keeping the outward appearance identical. Once remodeled, plans are to elevate the home to the height of the surrounding commercial building, and underneath the home create a two level open space that will be available to the public during business hours.

Macefield will be that much closer to home, if you believe in all that heaven stuff (because, if you do, you certainly believe that an old lady who refuses to sell her house to developers, thereby forcing crews to build on all three sides while she waits to meet her maker and then gives her house to the construction chief totally goes to heaven).

She willed her home to the developers.

Your outrage is nullified.

Well that'll be fucking ugly.

Also, I'm not usually one to whine about shit being not safe for work, but if you guys aren't going to have any standards for avatars, it would be nice if you could provide a way for us to turn them off if we aren't allowed to have that shit on our monitors.

what is the point of this? fill it in and make the building complete.

Keshmeshi -- you came to a place bankrolled by escort ads to demand family-friendly design?

bwahahah

@6,

Escort ads don't include blatant cock and balls. Nice try, though. And congrats on losing your avatar.

This sounds kinda neat, actually. From what I've read, the lady really didn't care what happened to the house after she died; she just wanted to die there.

WTF is with the haters? You'd rather have a boring flat wall than a public space with a great story? This is probably the best thing I've heard today.

I googled the Reach Returns company that is making the public space (apparently to be called "Credo Square").

Project website:
http://www.credosquare.com/

Drawing of the finished project:
http://www.credosquare.com/img/gallerypi…

Apparently, the space will be for "wine tasting, great hors d'oeuvres, music, laughter, introspection and most importantly, meaningful conversation". I'm doubtful that this will be an actual "public" space -- I doubt poor people will be allowed anywhere near wine tastings and hors d'oeuvres -- but I hope I'm wrong.

(And am I right that Edith Macefield GAVE her property to the development company, who then SOLD it and made a profit? Even though I'm sure this space will boost property values?)

So Mr. sexual freedom Dan Savage can't handle cock and balls on the very site funded by his declarations of cock and ball freedom

He is a hypocrite, as proven by the censure of my icon.

wow

Scam. The guy who bought the house had his real estate broker's license revoked back in 1998 and actually did time in Oregon for bank fraud and evading the FBI when they were looking for him. He also bought buildings in Seattle and hiked the rents up so high that everyone had to move out. Now he's some sort of motivational speaker? Bullshit.

I hope Martin does get his money, because Ballard surely ain't seeing any elevated houses any time soon.

@ 10) This isn't about suppressing your sexual freedom. You can be sexually free, make porn, or look at pictures of semi-erect cocks all you want--in private. But sexual freedom does not extend to posting porn in public. (Don't get me wrong, it was a damn fine cock.)

I don't feel suppressed, Dominic. I feel very surprised at Dan's hypocrisy.

But hey, we all want to make money, right? If pictures of dick will stop people from commenting (and thus cease supporting your ad revenue) they must be stopped.

I get it.

You are a corporation as much as the corporations that you deride.

@ 13) What's the hypocrisy again? Has Dan, like, been advocating that people post porn in public? I don't get your point.
Posted by Dominic Holden on July 8, 2009 at 1:37 PM

No, Dan has not advocated for people posting pr0n in public. But he has aligned his organization with sexual freedom, openness, and progressiveness as well as anti-shame.

To block a 50x50pixel icon of a dick underscores your playing of 'the game': admonishing repression (at the expense of income!) while talking endlessly of sexual freedom, expression, etc.

It doesn't matter to you.

Buy more stuff, Dominic, you fucking traitor

@1: An image from the KIRO report on the story will bring it even more to mind: Check out Slide 9.

By the way, Adam, your penis is not as important as you think it is. Since us working stiffs frequently have to remind SLOG about NSFW images, you were part of the problem.

@15, if you're going to bitch about not being able to have a big cock picture as your avatar, please stop calling it "pr0n". We're adults here, for the most part, I think we can handle the word porn. Here, I'll start you off. Porn. Porn. PORN. POOOOOORRRRRRRNNNNNN. Porny porny pornity porn porn.

So the news of a cool, stubborn old dead lady's Ballard home being lifted toward the heavens has devolved into an impassioned debate about the public display of cock and balls. :(

Has anyone tried Mike's Chili Parlor, just around the corner from old lady Macefield's house? Looks like they held out during construction too, will they also be lifted?

Um, is selfishness a virtue now? I am not saying she should have sold, it is her land and she can do with it what she wishes, but come on, its not anything admirable. She is no more a hero or incredible than people who choose to develop their land.

@Parker Todd and @ Adam Hurt: The Stranger is hardly The Man or The Enemy, and you know that. Sane adults generally have some sort of restraint on public exposure in the US. For example, most people don't whip their cock out in public. Focus your rage against the Actual Machine. And, ha! Parker Todd, uh, you do not speak for burner events; as Dom is, and always will be, completely welcomed, embraced, and loved. Get your fingers out of your respective asses and do something useful.

Yep, a paid reporter is exactly what we want in our community!

Michael: a racist
Dominic: a snitch

Ohhhh yeah. Right. Please.

You can't have it both ways.

:) Only prob is, you don't actually know either of them. Michael is not a racist. I invite you to talk with him about his views, not interpret an impassioned letter written two years ago. Not sure what action of Dom's made you label him a snitch. What ever it was, there is a whole person in there with a lifetime of experience and goodness. That goes for both of them. They are valued contributors and participants in the community. We know and love them and wouldn't have it any other way.

Candace: does a smiley disarm the seriousness of Dominic's duplicity? Of being a reporter and a burner, and a defender of corporation (see Adam's weird yet telling grievance at 12)?

I sense an identity crisis that I do not want the Burner community to be a part of, that is all.

I do not claim or intend to speak for the Burner community.

The two sex offender trolls have a point. The terms of use don't say anything about removing or changing avatar images. They say you're supposed to delete their accounts and remove their access from the site.

@Adam Hurd - I'm not aware of any public forum that isn't specifically geared towards sex that allows NSFW imagery in avatars. If you're running one, feel free to enlighten us all with its superior URL so that we can all join, post an avatar of somebody else's genitals, then be anonymously mean to people we've never met. Then we'll really be sticking it to the corporations of the world!

@Parker Todd - Apparently you're under the illusion that the people who spend $500-1,000+ on burning man aren't working for companies like Microsoft, Google, etc.? Corporations fund the majority of what's at that event either directly or indirectly. Not that I see any connection whatsoever between burning man and the original post nor between burning man and any of the other comments that have taken place.
