Books My New Favorite Blog Today

Significant Objects takes an object and pairs it with an author. Annie Nocenti (who used to write comics under the clever pseudonym "Ann Nocenti") writes about the above J.F.K. salt lick here. The blog describes themselves thusly:
1. The project’s curators purchase objects — for no more than a few dollars — from thrift stores and garage sales.2. A participating writer is paired with an object. He or she then writes a fictional story, in any style or voice, about the object. Voila! An unremarkable, castoff thingamajig has suddenly become a “significant” object!
3. Each significant object is listed for sale on eBay.
I don't know most of the authors but I am familiar with (and love) Lydia Millet's writing. She describes a Chili Cat here.

Do people actually actively read the "cool new blogs" they find or do they mostly just throw them into their rss reader and forget about them after a few days?

I remember Ann Nocenti writing dark and gritty Daredevil stories, centered around Hell's Kitchen. Good stuff!
