Economic Recovery Money in the Arts

Posted by Jen Graves on Wed, Jul 8, 2009 at 11:24 AM

1036/1247077415-bread-line.jpgSomehow I missed this announcement by the NEA two days ago—the agency has awarded $29,775,000 in 631 grants to arts agencies and organizations as part of the federal stimulus package. The money is intended to support jobs that would otherwise have to be cut in the downturn.

Here are the recipients locally, in alphabetical order (for amounts, click the link above):

*City of Seattle
*Confluences (Vancouver, WA)
*Copper Canyon Press
*4Culture
*Early Music America, Inc.
*Earshot Jazz
*Evergreen State College
*Freehold
*Intiman
*Museum of Glass (Tacoma)
*Folklife
*Northwest Heritage Resources
*On the Boards
*Pilchuck Glass School
*Hugo House
*Seattle Arts & Lectures
*Seattle Theatre Group
*University of Washington (looking into whether this means the Henry Art Gallery)
*Washington State Parks & Rec
*Youth in Focus

Notably missing on the art side is Seattle Art Museum, which has made staff cuts and did apply for money.

This is awesome news.

Local arts organizations should note that 4Culture and the Seattle Office of Arts and Cultural Affairs are each re-granting the funding they received to local/regional organizations. So groups who weren't directly funded from the NEA (or who were perhaps ineligible to apply) may still have a chance at accessing these funds to save jobs or artist contracts at risk in their organizations.

Applications and guidelines for the stimulus grants from the Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs are available at www.seattle.gov/arts/funding/arts_jobs.a…;. 4Culture’s application and guidelines are available at www.4culture.org/arts/saveartjobs.

The deadline to apply for either opportunity is Monday, Aug. 10.

Spending money on artists has a very high stimulus effect.

The Seattle Art Museum ... less so.

Remember, give a starving artist $1000 and they'll spend most of it locally, creating more jobs - give a rich patron of the arts $1000 and they'll ship it overseas to invest.

Why is it Richard Hugo House reports receiving $25,000 according to Recovery.org, but creating or saving 0 jobs?
